I don't think there is any doubt that a "target rifle" of just about any era will shoot at least as well if not better than 99% of sporters, for a start a heavy barrel is a heck of an advantage in shooting a 22 well and consistently. I've had a modified Vickers Martini 22 target rifle (with a modern thumbhole stock and scope) for over 30 years that is consistently the most accurate 22 I've ever come across. I haul it out occasionally when I want to test a batch of ammo, or just reassure myself I can still shoot. I won't shoot in in any sort of "competition" like this for two reasons, - I prefer the challenge to shoot genuine sporting rifles, and I might be horribly disappointed if I got beat with it!!

I really am looking forward to shooting the 541T. In 1980 on Friday "late night shopping" I used to go up to Din Collings shop in Karori and hang out with him and his lovely wife Viv. Din was very free with his time and it was possible to learn a hell of a lot talking with him. He had a Remington 541S on the rack that I wanted badly, but he talked me out of it, explaining that it was cheap roll engraving and that there was a superior model - the 541T. He convinced me to wait till one turned up - well Din is long passed and during the ensuing 40 years I've only had one or two opportunities at a 541T ,and until @Tedz50 was kind enough to offer me his, I have't had one. Proves all good things come to those who wait!
