    Projectile manufacturing

Bryn at Targex has been doing this a long time but never expanded.

I'm told there is a major shortage of anything high BC in NZ and this will only get worse. It's never been easy.

I think we can agree a lot of people like these frangible non-bonded high BC projectiles for both LR target shooting and game.

These projectiles are the cheapest and easiest to make.

Who would be interested in a crowdfunded start up to produce a domestic projectile range for NZ. Usual callibres, high BC swaged jacket projectiles. If Bryn wanted to expand then funding him would be better than competition.

Design of the projectile is no issue ($$$) and the machining skill to create the dies and machinery to produce projectiles is all available domestically.

Funding could be achieved through crowd funding advertised through here, magazines etc. Basically just pre-sale of projectiles.

Interesting, I was just speaking of this very topic at our last range meeting. All of us 1000 yarders are running short on projectiles and I made mention of Bryn's very well made bullets.
There was some interest and suggestion of a bulk purchase through the NRA of common used cals and weights to expand on his current offerings. P/m me if you would like to pursue this option further.

Surely the issue will be getting the jackets for the projectiles which are still made overseas and probably in short supply as well?

    Interesting idea.

    But not for me.
I've been importing projectiles for my personal use for a few years.

I have enough in my stock for a couple of years, along with a matching amount of primers.
    I've got enough cases.

The only thing I'm a little short of is powder, I've only got enough for 15 months or so.

If I could have run my Ar on BP I would have given it a jam.

Actually, the AK would probably work fine.

Last stuff I bought off him was for Blackpowder rifles.

Has he expanded to smokeless powder?

Really good idea, and worth getting behind - but: Berger are supplying the jackets, so supply may not be greatly different to projectiles, the gamechanger might be the ability to get the correct raw materials and make jackets here. NZ needs to bring back manufacturing on all levels.

pretty sure I've seen vid of swaging jackets out of copper sheet.
not hard to set up for that.
whole operation looked pretty simple on the screen

The jackets are made of a copper alloy that is different for various bullets and thats the tricky bit.

The jackets could be made. If we can't make a copper jacket in this country there is something horribly wrong. Maybe the alloy can't be made, but any alloy can be made to order.

Limit to a single weight in each major caliber. Set the fixed parameter as the most common fast barrel twist. Get a projectile shape engineered by a designer for optimal BC

This will involve the relative densities and thickness of the jacket vs billet.

Have dies made for the projectiles. Test them. Establish working BC. People will refine these over time. If there's only one projectile a BC will be found by best fit quickly.

Get some form of production manufacturing set up. It could be 50 retirees with OCD doing it in their garage. Or outsourced to an engineering firm.

Powder and primers and brass could follow, but projectiles are easiest.

Having a reliable bulk kiwi projectile should be doable.

As others have said, we need to get back to making our own stuff.
