The "proper" glass and mounts for a pre64 m70

Rifle only really gets taken out for special occasions, farm hunting etc so I've been thinking a bit lately I should make it properly look the part since a few purists have scoffed at the current Talleys and Euro scope on it.
So what is the "proper" setup for a rifle like this? Leupold bases and twist-in rings and an old redfield/weaver/leupold?

Definitely Buehler or conetrol mounts for such a lovely rifle. I have a new base of both types here and conetrol rings.

Nice rifle, nice scope - and together I'd say they just work hey? And the issue with it is what exactly?

    Not mine

It will come in handy if you want to use period correct tender to complete the purchase of the scope. It should be sufficient regardless of whether the seller observes period correct inflationary values, or todays collectable value of this note.

If you want it to represent a package deal someone might have bought from Tisdalls, an old Lyman 2.5x would look like you didn't deliberately do it retrospectively. But any Leupold/Weaver fixed 4x or fixed 6x would be my first cast. Authentic and should still be servicable too.

I think there are a set of the Talley grooved bases here (nothing like what you have now). Gunworks have the correct rings but they are horribly expensive . . . My pre 64 M70 has "turn in" bases, they should be about as the post 64s used the same ones. Plenty of rings for them here.

Looks fine the way it is. Who cares if purists scoff? As long as you like using it what does it matter?

    Beautiful rifle by the way.

I actually like the idea of it being "all american" since it is an iconic American rifle. If i was looking at it purely as a hunting tool I wouldn't care because yes, it works very well as is.

This is the proper mount of the period :

My uncle bought an original Winchester 70 pre64 in 264 win mag, and that was the exact same mount on it with the Bausch and lomb scope.

I think I might be able to locate the same bases at least

I've got one of the Leupold copies of the "Alaskan" and it's a pretty decent scope compared with lots of the older ones. It's a 7/8 tube which is a bugger but it ain't going anywhere (except on my next special old time rifle build)
