Thread: The "proper" glass and mounts for a pre64 m70

The classic scope of that period was the Lyman All-American. But unless you can source a pristine example why would you wish to handicap the rifle with a less than perfect example.
The Lyman Alaskan , which had a name for itself way way back is not nowadays up to scratch. That was typical of all they had back then.
I like the rifle the way it is. The scope on it is nicely sized and the optics beat those old scopes hands down.

Yep, modern glass coating technology is so far ahead of what they had back then that it would not be a step forward to change it out for a 'period' scope in my viewpoint. Better to leave it with the current scope and have it much more effective and useable.

I think a few of you are missing the point I don't really care about having the latest and greatest on this rifle as long as it's functional, it might go farm hunting a couple of times a year and lob a few chip shots at some easy deer. It's more a keepsake and a conversation piece and as such I'd kind of like to have it stick to a theme. Have managed to find a couple of Leupold steel tube Alaskan scopes on Ebay but both 2.5x, I'd really like to find one in 4x.

There is a fixed 6x for sale in the BST section that would do the business...

Edit: it is SPF.

I like your idea in keeping it 'in period'.
I bought 4 pre 64 model 70's from a collection a few years back.....one was a 1939 30'06......
Posted pics of it up on a US gun forum that I was a member of........without exception, all the members agreed that it should look 'in period'.........and one of them donated a pre WWII K4 Weaver along with the correct rings. Sighted it in and took it on a balloted fallow hunt in Woodhill. Shot a Fallow buck at 110m. It only gets to go hunting when its an easy hunt as the rifle is in pristine condition and I would hate to mark it........but it does get taken out of the safe, fondled and admired a lot.

Am looking for an early 60's scope for the early 60's super grade 270 which has a Monte Kennedy stock.

The mid 50's 308 Featherweight has a 'Scope Chief' period correct, scope mounted on it.....Another gift from a friend in the USA.

Vintage leupold maybe?
Conetrol mounts were about back then and are a nice touch.
Even if twist in redfield type.
Weavers might be classic but nicer ones about. Weaver also made see though rings and if you put those abominations on it you need the bash.
Depends how far back classic means.
There is that supplier in the states that sells vintage scopes. Refurbished, rebuilt etc.

I've got one of these sitting around I likely won't use not as old as the steel tube buy might work for you. It's pretty tidy if your interested let me know and I can dig it out and put up some pics

When I owned your Winny, it had a 6x gloss Leupold in gloss steel Redfield/Leupold mounts. This set up is post '60s but pretty correct for when this rifle was likely put together 70/80's with its custom features. The custom rifles section of Gun Digest was full of these set-ups. The Leupold is the "best looking" scope they ever made imo. Those low profile caps are beautiful.

New old stock 60s Leopold Detacho-Mount rings and bases 211 and 316
The 316 rear base has the adjustable peep in it for when the scope and rings are off

Comes with full instructions for the technically challenged

Throw a Leupold gloss something like these on it and you are done

And get some bloody open sights on it so it's not mistaken for a modern repop
And so you're not tempted to thread it for a suppressor

I've got open sights for it but yes those mounts and an old gloss 2-7 or 4x something would be perfect
