Pump rifle build questions - 375 h&h??

So I've just moved to BC and have a job up in some grizzly country. I figured this would be a really good excuse to build a new gun... I've always wanted a 375 h&h but I'm not super fast on the bolt. I've been toying with the idea of building (ie paying a gunsmith) a 375 h&h pump action on a rem 7600 or browning bpr, however I know very little about these and wonder if I'll be able to find an action that's strong enough and long enough for the 375? Also as an added challenge I'm one of those weird left eyed right handed people so would prefer a left handed pump. So basically I'm picturing a left handed pump rifle in 375 h&h with a 20 inch barrel, 5 shot drop out mag and iron sights.

Realistically it might have been done by someone maybe !

But if you were to go with an -06 length pump action you could at least bump it up to .35 Whelen and I expect it would be a handy bear rifle

JGS will rebore a 7600 to 9.3x62, might be a better bet?
There are a number of threads on 24 hour campfire about doing this.

I've seen a .375 in lever action online......food for thought?

Probably cheaper in the long ran compared to modifying a pump action

A double barrelled 375 is easier to find and will suit your kak handed shooting style.

I’m left handed, but right eye dominant, so know how you feel.

Something rings a bell about aussie getting browning autos converted to heavy calibres for sambar.

@LoganRobertson where are you based.
If you live outside of NZ you can get semi auto 300 win mags, and I dont see why they couldn't do one in 375 h&h.
In NZ you cant get them and possibly later the pump rifles could be banned also.
I'm guessing BC is British Columbia, maybe. Could be wrong.

But if I could get a semi in 375h&h, then I would.
Or if your really game get a 458 win mag.

An off the shelf marlin 1895G in 45-70 would probably do the job

have a look at what the pros in the area are using and ask yourself why......the idea of a double rifle is an old one and reasons of WHY are as good today as they were 100 years ago....loads have come a long way in that time....you can buy a double rifle in either 30/06 or .45/70 for under 2k and you can load either of those cartridges down to mild plinking level or up to tooth rattling power house level..... at end of day in a smelly stuff hitting whirly thing moment you want something that comes up bloody quickly and naturally to the eye,will spit the first shot where needed and 2nd quickly behind it.you cant short shuck a break open....you sure as shit can a pump with hot loads.

Or Krieghoff Semprio if you have the dosh....(And if you are feeding a regular shooting habit with 375 H&H then you will need the dosh...) The semprio is slick, "pump" action capable of those calibres. It is different from a conventional pump but definitely worth looking at even if it is just to dribble on it and start looking for lotto tickets....

Why not just buy a left-handed Browning Long Trak BAR in .300 Win Mag and run 220 grain loads? No bears are going to argue with that! The fact is that most bear control guns are pump action shotguns with slug loads.

plurry pleased you said that last bit.....shotgun loads are far more potent than alot of folk realise.....if remington cam safely make loads doing 1700fps and some handloaders are going up to 2000fps with an once of steel......there seems to be no reason you couldnt make a hard buckshot load far more potent than normal...yes it will blow pattern,but there are ways around that too...steel shot wad unslit comes to mind,plenty of big angry pussy cats were put down with a load of #00 buck at velocities way less than that.

True, slug loads kill at both ends, you shoulder will back up that claim if you start using slugs in 12 guage!

@jim160 I'm from New Zealand and have just moved to British Colombia. Unfortunately I have a distrust for semis and I would like to bring whatever I get back to New Zealand. @MSL the 45/70 guide gun would be ideal but I already have one in New Zealand so I'm kinda using this as an excuse to get something new. As much as I would like a double gun I'd also like to use whatever I get for hunting other things as well and I may even come across the od disgruntled pack of wolves. That Krieghoff looks like a neat machine though I do wonder if they ever bend the rods they slide on. I realise that a 12g or 45/70 is the logical choice but I'm not always a logical person. I'm wondering how much difference there is between a Browning BAR and BPR? Could a LH BAR receiver be fitted with modified BPR internals? Since they come in magnum rounds would they cycle a 375 h&h?
I mean chances are I'll probably waste everyone's time with these questions and then get a 12g anyway but it's nice to dream up what I want

That "rod" is the bolt. It actually works internally much like a bolt action but instead of the bolt going back and forward the "pump" means the forend does the moving. Having seen them in action I can say that if I had the $$$ I would have no qualms in grabbing one. we were watching a guy sight in his 300 win mag without any issues. The engineering and build quality puts the right up there as far as any other gun goes and they are top end firearms so I would suspect little change for $10k NZ if any.

@timattalon they seem to be a bit cheaper here, there's a 300 win mag one with a ziess conquest 3-9x40 for 5800 CAD. It might be the go in a few paydays... Maybe I should hold off until the NZ government sorts their pencil pushing in case I can't bring it back

@LoganRobertson At that price I would almost be tempted to get it anyway and sell it if you cannot bring it back. I dont know if it actually counts as a pump action as technically the stock comes back with recoil in a natural motion (fore end goes forward to reload.....)

Keep your eye out for other calibres as they are a switch barrel system too so you can change calibres faster than you can change ammo....

@timattalon not sure why it double posted that, must be an error on my part. I'll see if it's still for sale in a month or 2, I might have to get a shotty in the meantime. Its good to know they've got a barrel change system, might even be able to get it in 375 h&h...

A cape rifle in 9.3 x74r, and 16 gauge should tick the box mind you it might be an antique.

If you are going down that road there is 4 bore and 8 gauge stopping rifles......:)

I've seen Ian macullums piece on those, one would definitely do the job Logan Robertson is wanting done even there were 3 bears one behind the other.

Ok, I am in Canada, been here for years, I've had to shoot a predatory black bear, and have been charged by a grizzly, close enough that she broke the tip, on my 9 foot fly rod.( I can smell her breath, as I type this) and had to spend half a day sitting, on a big fuel tank 200000 L, while a barren ground grizzly, was down below, chased off with a chopper, called in from Cambridge bay.
So my advice, take a bear awareness course, buy sum bear spray, try to find a Canadian hunter, to take you under the wing, till you learn a bit, about the critters in the BC wild.
Bear spray is very effective, but it can not keep a determined bear off you, A predatory Attack (very Rare) one of you, will be killed.

The pump .375 H&H is a dead hoarse, the case is 72mm long and too long, for rem or browning pump, the 300 win/338 win are 62 mm, either of these are good options, as is the 3006 with heavy's. the 9.3x62 can be converted, but I try and find one of the Verney-Carron pump rifles, was a few sold in 9.3x62, was a used one in Coraline sports, Fort StJohn BC a while back.
What do I carry, I have a double rifle in 9.3x74, its nice and light 6lbs, I hunt (elk/moose) with a 9.3x62 Sako, Have a BLR .358 win takedown for fly in trips. one of these would be what I take, if I expected to need bear protection.
Generally I hunt with a M70 308, M700 300H&H, or a 7x57 or 7x64. 6.5x54
I carry a 45 colt in a Winchester M1892, for stuffing about in the bush, getting berries, mushrooms, firewood, fishing etc.
Pick something light and easy to carry, and it will likely be close by, if you need it, You will get a dozen different answers, on what you need from a dozen different people, pay attention to trappers, guides and Native hunters, When I worked in the Artic, the bear wardens, (Inuit hunters) often had a 30-30, 303 or similar rifle.
Oh and take a bear awareness course. better to avoid a problem.

I have noticed kiwis tend to be a bit spoilt in that when we go hunting, we dont usually turn into the hunted ones....

Just remember to legally carry and own a rifle in Canada you need a Licence. ( you may have offical residence I’m not sure). This is often an issue with foreign guides working in Canada for the season. And in bear country always nice having some defence!

@timattalon yup and I'm sure there would be a lot less of the small calibers and more bigger magnum calibres carried in the nz bush if there was

How hard would it be to find a Browning BPR over there?. Never seen one here. Only made for about 5 years.
