I have a Ruger Hawkeye and have to do the same. I have found that applying forward pressure on the bolt as I close it, stops that "click".

All firearms are painfully loud to load when you suspect a deer is close. Check your safety for functionality and use it.

Yes good trick, I've tried the same but it's still not ideal. I might try the half-cock mod that @308 suggested some time. Right now I just load it and use the safety (assuming it's not working and will spontaneously discharge when I turn it off though, of course...) when I think I'm close. Not ideal.

Safety mechanisms are very good these days. If you hunt alone, as someone said, use the safety.
