    Rangefinder - Need your opinions

    Hey guys,

I know there are a few rangefinder threads out there and I have read them but decided it would be best to start another with the ever changing technology out there.

What I was after was a Rangerfinder minimum distance 1000/y.
I like to buy quality gear that will last for a long time so realize this will come at a sting.
So from what I've read people are disliking Leupold and going with Lecia ?
My budget would like to be kept to a minimum.

Appreciate your thoughts on the subject.
    Dan

I have had a leupold rangefinder and passed it on. My fault - should have done my research better.
Picked up a leica 1600 a few years ago and it is still going strong. Great little piece of kit!

If you want quality on a reduced budget I would look at a second hand zeiss, leica or swarovski.

Yukon seem to be getting good reviews too and a lot cheaper than Leica.

    I have Leupold 1000 DNA
I get reliable readings to 700ish yards.
Never had a reading return past 800.
    Do not buy.
    .
Not used the Yukon, but heard good reports.

Get a Leica - there is a reason they get recommended.

I actually went the other way, had a Leica 1200 and went to a Loopy 1200i DNA. Reads just as reliable, gets 1000yds easy plus has angle compensation.
Dont touch the earlier RX II,III or IV Loopy's - they were just crap!! Had a RX III and that couldn't range more than 400yds in ideal conditions and was a complete waste of time if the sun was out.

I wouldn't bother with anything other than the 1600. No point in buying old technology

I sold my 1200 to up to a 1600b.Nothing wrong with the 1200 just the 16B had features I wanted.
Start there and no need to upgrade for a considerable time.

Good choice. Definitely the way to go.

I tried all the Leupolds outside the shop for about an hour and they just couldn't compete with the Leica's on any level at all. I also went with the 1600's and have had them ranging out to 1800-1900 feet if I can hold them steady enough.

In threads like this people will often throw out the old, "I won't shoot beyond 400-500 meters so the Leupold is fine for me." Well, I probably wouldn't either, but I like to know how far things are away rather than a blank ---. Then you know how much closer you need/want to get, rather than having to keep checking to finally get a reading. Not to mention if they can range 3 or 4x your shooting distance then they're going to work every bloody time at the distance you need them for.
