Thread: Re-barrel a rifle - trigger event ?

Got a REM in 708 that I think needs a new barrel. I picked a new replacement factory bbl a while back taken off a donor action. If I take this to a gunsmith to take off old bbl & replace with my own new bbl, is that deemed a trigger event ?

Where does it say that? How about if it's at the gunsmith for less than 30days?

I haven't looked into this in detail, but couldn't see an obvious requirement on the registry website.

Best bet ask the gunsmith

And you drop it off to the gunsmith and pick it up
He would have to source the barrel ect or you pick up in person
From the manufacturer or person selling it

It is a trigger event if he holds it for more then 30 days
Or you get a mail order form ect

It wasnt when I looked into it bar the 30 day thing

The rifle with shot out 708 barrel and the replacement bbl are both in my possession for several years.
I get the bit about drop off & pick up, and thanks to all about the heads up on 30 day limit, & mail order form.
I’m going to make enquiries with several gunsmiths & am anticipating I might get conflicting answers. Hence doing my own homework first.

Yes, had a good read thru this and other info on GC website. It very helpful but could not see info regarding the specifics of my example.

I spoke to a gunsmith the other day about getting some work done on a rifle, he said gunsmiths were exempt form the 30 day rule.

As a gunsmith no we are definitely not exempt from the 30 day rule
And the email sent out to dealers outlined this pretty clearly (for a change)

Was told by local arms officer that it has to be entered as dealer stock and
Registered to my dealers license if I hold for over 30 days
Under 30 days can be entered into my book i use for Gunsmithing jobs
Of which they don’t take copies of the info from (so far)

But still have to record
in and out date
full license details
Rifle make caliber serial number and job carried out (parts supplied ect)
As well as contact ph number and current address
In the Gunsmithing jobs book (or what ever system the dealer uses)

I was talking with one of the FSA minions today and asked the question: if I've got a rifle and a replacement barrel in my possession and I get a gunsmith to fit it is this an activating event for registration. The answer was no, as long as the firearm was in the gunsmiths possession for less than 30 days. Recorded the conversation for reference but that was his answer and he checked with other personel.

I thought you meant you'd trigger the forum into a calibers argument
