Re-blueing the old girls

Ive got an old P14 and a BSA Martini that I'm having rust issues with. Ive got a generous coat of oil on that holds it bay but looking for a more permanent option.

I will be lining the gun room with gib and running a vent from the house (so I get the dry HRV air), but wondering if re-blueing is an option.

I dont know stuff all about the subject, is it cheap enough to get done? or is there a simple enough DIY kit?


Also while I'm here, the Martini is chambered in 5.6x52R, I think thats also .22 high power or .22 savage (feel free to correct me) but thats about where my knowledge stops. Its a take down gun-theres a thumb screw on the right side that unwinds to "un-clamp" the barrel thread then the barrel and fore-wood unscrew.

Anybody know anything about guns of that sort? Just after a bit of info as it was my grandfathers rifle and I dont know sweet stuff all about it:thumbsup:

Is it a Greener GP ?
The GP rifles had that arrangement where the barrel could be removed and replaced with all sorts of things like harpoon and line launchers.

Re bluing your P14 using a kit like that mentioned by Toby will certainly be worth while.
Applying the chemical blue is straight forward and very easy.
Preparing the surface to recieve the blue is everything.
The better this is done the better the end result will be.

Rebluing your Martini will severly reduce any collector value if your considering handing it on to family as a heirloom/collector peice.
The value will be retained only if it's in original condition and for older rifles like this the worn patina is what will be looked for.
I'd just keep it well oiled or if your storing it for any lenght of time I'd pack it in grease.

Thanks for the info Pete it was real helpful.

Cant find the camera but just got the gun out for a look, the barrel and fold up aperture sight both have BSA markings. So it must all be factory huh.

Good excuse to get to work on the gun room:D

I'd love to see some pics of the BSA.

I have a real soft spot for rifles of this era.

0000 steel wool and brake cleaner worked well for me

Depending on how bad the surface finish is depends on how you prep.

I would steer clear of the Kero, use a good degreaser instead.

Begin with removing all the oil grease and rust.
Plug the barrel at both ends.

Check out how Larry Potterfield at Midway USA does it.

I'd also polish the barrel and any other visible parts afer the 220 emery with 600 wet n dry then shine them up real nice with 0000 steel wool.

Also it is critically important to remove all traces of oil or grease from the steel surface, even the oil from a fingerprint will show in the finished product.

I'd also polish with 0000 steel wool between each application of Chemical Blue.

Finally the more layers of blue you apply the deeper the Blued finish will be.

I've reblued over a dozen rifles using this method.

The first one didn't turn out so good because I wasn't fussy enough with the prep, especially with making sure all the rust and oil/grease was removed.

Please Please Please DO NOT Reblue the Martini Henry.

It's way to nice to mess with the original finish.

I just blued a parker hale .303 this morning, getting paid with a sausage roll, should be here soon, I just gotta finish the stock.

Here's a pic of it, just the barrel has been done, the guy liked it I thought another coat or 2 to darken it up but meh, He's happy, I'm happy I got my sausage roll so all is good in the world.

If thats what one sausage roll gets what would two sausage rolls get me?

0000 steel wool is apparently not good on the lungs (the loose fibres I mean - can't imagine you trying to inhale a whole piece of it). I use it on wood - and have been advised by several suppliers now when purchasing to absolutely ensure I wear a suitable face mask.

I used some of that Birchwood cases on the barrels of a homemade double gun and was surprised at the finish, but prep is everyyhing

Just finished bluing the barrel on a guys .270 last night. Would show pics but not my gun so better not but I think its my best work to date. Must admit doing work for my dads mate made

Yup, fine steelwool also gets embedded in the wood, and in a couple of months your lovely piece of furniture starts to rust :D

Have a look at the 3M synthetic sanding pads, should find them in the paint section at Mitre or Bunnings. The grey one is about 600 grit, and the white one is around 1000 grit. Very good, and lasts for a looooong time.

When I was making duck calls I got given some sand paper to make it super smooth, it felt like paper and was white, it came up very smooth but never had the numbers on the bottom and the guy never told me what it was.

Has anyone done a cold blueing job with Kleen bores 'black magic'?
