can anyone identify the markings stamped into this deactivated pineapple grenade. I would like to know its authenticity and age if possible.

    Thanks in advance

Its a Mk 2 defensive hand grenade. They were all originally yellow but were painted olive drab for wartime use. US inception in 1918 but used by a few countries up until the 70's.

Looks legit. It's not the training version, as they have the fly off lever cast as part of the body. Which means at some point this thing has/ had explosive in it.

If someone (army ammo tech or bomb disposal) has had a good look to make sure it is safe there will be some kind of "Free From Explosive" (usually FFE stamped on it) markings on it and/ or big holes drilled through it.

If it hasn't got that, it likely still has explosive in it but there might be some kind of break in the firing train - for example the fuse is stuffed/ de-activated. In which case it definitely doesn't make the whole thing safe.

    - it happens, Kaipara RSA had a live grenade that someone donated, sitting in a grenade for years until someone figured out it wasn't a toy. - Live grenade found at RSA - crime - national | Stuff.co.nz

If it hasn't got any "free from explosive" markings or holes drilled in it then leave it where it is and call the police for someone to come and deal to it.

And you would be surprised/ scared how many grenades of different types were/ are sitting around in NZ. When I was a kid we were exploring an old shed on a mates farm (ex military land up north) and found boxes of the things and crates of 303 ammo. Mate told his dad and the army came out and blew up the shed

The top should unscrew, alternatively if the grenade weighs anymore than 1lb 5oz you I would get it checked out, the charge weighs 2ozs.
