Recommended Gunsmiths Auckland Bedding Job 5R

    Hi,
Have a couple of small jobs and wondering if anyone could recommend any Gunsmiths close to Auckland?

1.Epoxy Bed action and drop Timney trigger into Remington 5R .308
2.Remove muzzle brake from Rock River Fred Eichler AR-15

These are both also DIY jobs you would probably say and was going to do myself but the Remington deserves a professional job, will practice bedding on an old shitter at a later date.

AR-15 muzzle brake works great but want the option of taking on/off, use suppressor bit more socially acceptable rifle range AR.

It's on tight as f*%k with loctite, damn yanks, had a couple of goes heat, vice etc....bla bla.....realise when my Father, who is a Mechanic watching/helping says "think you should take it to a gunsmith".... is probably good advice....

Nathan Foster is flat out these days as would have been first choice as the guru, so looking at probably Dean Maisey in TGA or Arthur Cleland in Hamilton.

    Value any suggestions?
    Cheers

yea my RRAs muzzle break was pinned on with a weld drilled thru the muzzle break and thread on barrel, removing it fucked the thread quite a bit

you wold be able to do a timeney your self with the help of youtube and a spare 20min

mitch maxberry is my go-to and i live in the far north, and he is in wellington
a real expert on remington 700s
absolutly no complaints about price either

    Thanks Guys,
I had a close inspection of brake as had been in touch with RRA in the Sates also and can't see any blind weld over a pin, said it was just Loctite?
If it is pinned will just leave how is.

Yes trigger would be a piece of cake, just thought might as well get all done at same time.
Have wound the adjustment screw right out and factory trigger isn't actually too bad, rifle doesn't even really need bedding as flatteringly accurate as is but I guess it's just one of those things like when you just keep trying to get that knife a wee bit sharper...

haha sounds like your talking youself out of it, trigger does come off anyway during bedding and yea the first 700 trigger you do takes a bit of thinking and youtube
I prefer my knives really sharp....

I realize this is an old thread.

@Proudkiwi whats the problem with Arthur? Was looking at sending something too him, with a bit of research you seem to be the only bad experience/recommendation I can find for him? Or is it only bedding jobs you wouldn't use him for?

I wouldn't use him for anything because he seems incapable of following instructions.

And he's also one of those old guys that likes talking shit about everyone else. I can't be fucked with people like that.

Dean Maisey did a really good job, just don't ask me what it cost as had a few things done and a while back. You may have to wait with him but you would struggle to fault his workmanship from what I've seen.

Yeah, there's a few of us old farts around like that. Generally see is in banks as well, holding up the queue. Also on rifle ranges, holding up earnest young men from shooting

And yes you are right about the instruction issue.

If the rifle shoots well as is, I wouldn't bother getting it bedded. I've seen a few good rifles turn to shit becuase the owners wanted them bedded. I'd personally only try bedding if it didn't shoot ok to start with...,

If someone was talking shit about other people the way Arthur does in a bank, or any other place for that matter, he would be asked to leave. Regardless of age.

And I certainly wouldn't consider myself an 'earnest young man' anymore. More a cynical old bastard
