    Red Dot v Skinner Sights

Looking to buy a bush gun and don't want to put a scope on it. Trouble is at 45, the old mice pies are not as good as they used to be. So would appreciate input from people who use either of the above. Skinner sights would look better, but can get the Bushnell TRS 25 for about the same money which might keep me going longer as the eyesight not going to get any better.
    Thanks

I have used both Tasco Pro Point and Aimpoint on my .375 Winchester lever gun and on a pump shotty...swear by them for making up for shortages due to age and eye sight...have never tried skinners.
Which is worse, ignorance or apathy...I don't know and don't care.

ive got skinners, absolutely love them. nothing to go wrong, low profile etc, etc.

    but my eyesight is good.

if you are ever in the Welly region, drop me a PM, happy to let you have a go with the skinners at local range to see how you like them.

I've got a TRS25 and at 4MOA the dot is a bit fat so I'd only range myself out to 80-100m with it but hey that's why it's cheaper.

Haven't tried the Skinners but have shot opensight and I'd say it's a matter of taste but the Skinners have less bits to fog up and go wrong so my call is 60/40 in favour of the opensights? The only time a red dot beat them IMO is in very low light conditions

I have skinner sights on my Rossi .44mag and my mice pies are not that great either.

I like them, probably rolled the clock back ten years as far as the eyesight goes.

I recon they are perfect for a bush gun.

That said they wont beat optical sights except the skinners are ahead in simplicity, weight and very low profile.

BTW shooting with aperture sights is pretty accurate too.

You also have the option of unscrewing the aperture insert and using the remaining sight as a Ghost Ring for low light and close range.

Aperture sights are extremely functional and deliver practical accuracy for any closer range shooting at low cost and bulk and high durability and simplicity. Would definitely choose over a budget dot sight.

Jeezus Gimp, your first sentence sound like a marketing blurb

Yeah, the skinners are sweet, I got 2 apertures, and if it gets real thick and close, you can even screw out the aperture to get a super large rear aperture. Still need to do a bit more testing about how many MOA I get for each revolution of the rear sight.

I recently fitted a scout style scope to my 44 Rossi. I don't think it looks awesome but it's a tool/toy. Miles better then the old Buck horn ones that it came with originally.

Not sure the Bushnell you mentioned has very good reviews, as it's pretty cheap. I'd look at a Burris Fast fire if I was you.

    My utmost apologies

Doesn't hurt to discuss all options. For failing eyes there's nothing better then a scope.
