Mmm..what do you reckon the capabilities of those frontiers top out at? 303 is a 1:10 twist correct? I have an Interarms Mark X in 308 with 1:10 twist and a bunch of Frontier CMJ flat point .308dia ( semi RN really) 150gn projectiles. What max vel do you think they would hold up for?

I was using the same load as I use with these projectiles in my .308, 32 grains of AR2206H. In the .308 these chronograph 1,910 fps and shoot really well. I think that it was the very deep two groove rifling in the .303 that did them in. You should be able push them harder than that if you want to in your .308. My load does shoot way low compared to the full power loads so I need to dial to zero them when I use them

Nah, all overweight .30-06s. 350 Rem Mag has more eye appeal as an "A what?" rifle but is a little cramped in a short mag though.

PS. There is also a 9.3 BS, 350 necked up.

Ive got a bunch of older cal, the 25-20, 32-20, 7x57, and 7x57R getting lots of mileage in the hills, .22 hornet 6.5x54,and 7x65R getting a few hunts a year.
.17 hornet and a lightweight6.5 creedmore are my only newer cartridges,
Plenty of 50 plus year olds, .358 win and 9.3x64, 7x64, .222 etc.
During the compoent and ammo shortage, i found sum of the older cals, easier to source brass, drying up now,

@muzza 338-06 easiest way to get a modern cartridge closest to the 318 Westley Richards

obsolete cartridges at least give you something to do ae!
more expensive brass, bullet molds etc.

how many still have the old 8x57 - was popular back in sixties as a hunting rifle - I quess because ex German army Mausers were available

It surprises me that 6.5x55 is mentioned in this thread as possibly being redundant. Tikka still make them (as does Blaser).
There must be thousands of the M96 & 93 ex service rifles in NZ.
Mine is a modern (20 years old) S&L and is superb.
N560 and 140 AMAX or Gold Dots at 2840fps and its good for anything. 21.5" barrel.

Its the second 6.5x55 I have had and they both have been superbly accurate.

The S&L is my only heirloom rifle and its ear marked to go on to my sons. I even keep a little note book tracking the loads and details, and the loaded ammo in stock so that they can just pick it up and use it when the time inevitably comes.

@Barry the hunter well I am using what I think is a post war Brno mauser 8x57 albeit in a sporter stock, better trigger and of course a scope. Think there might be a 98 in their model number. Not a VZ I think.
Got my last 2 deer, missed (well hit it but got away) a pig and muffed a chance at another pig in a mad rush (another story) as the timney safety was on and that was it.

Anything with Creedmore after it will be redundant in the near future

In the very early 1990's a friend and I were chronographing some 6.5x55 loads on my new 35P. One load was the Norma 140 grain load. This chronographed 2,750 fps. a little faster than claimed for the highly touted 147 grain load in the Creedmoor. Seems to me we have not made much progress in 30 years.

plenty id say........... plan on taking mine to the range next week (weather permitting ) to make sure its ready for the roar and any winter hunts i might get ....a lack of variety on the ammo shelf means reloading is the way to go
