    Redundant Calibres

Whilst sizing some cases [223] I thought about how many calibres have briefly appeared on the shooting front then fade into the distance popularity wise or as a bad marketing exercise....204 Ruger .17 WSM. There are numerous other examples. How many hunters grab the old "traditional " calibres when thinking about a hunt.

7mm-08 isn't dead but I wish I got a .308 for the better ammo selection

Was going to get 7mm08 ended up with a 308 due to more ammo around for it.

I must be 'traditional' as I use 7x57 and 222 for hunting.
(don't own any of the new calibres).

    Greetings all,
Redundant is a funny word. Its meaning has come to mean something that is no longer required as in a person being made redundant. Generally the word means something that is excess of normal which does not help us much but could be applied to some of the behemoth cartridges that have appeared in recent years. The thrust of @TeRei opening post, clearly stated, is who shoots the old and less appreciated cartridges. Well me for one. Looking in my rifle cupboard there are more for cartridges with origins prior to 1900 than after and only one 21st century cartridge. Provided usable cases can be sourced or made together with projectiles and a sound firearm all cartridges can live on, even the 44-77, regardless of how redundant, obsolete or outdated they may seem to others.
    Regards Grandpamac.
PS I must take my Martini .30-40 Krag to the range this Sunday. Perhaps I could use it in a 300 yard F Class shoot one day.

I have an acquaintance who goes on and on about the magnificence of the 204 Ruger (despite not having one). Is it any good or not? Can you buy ammo for it at H&F?

    Disclaimer: Centrefire I use .308, 30-30 and .223. Rimfire 22LR, 22WMR and 17HMR

I have a 204 centrefire rifle for shooting varments at longer ranges and it works great for that purpose for me. I shoot rabbits plovers cats magpies etc,it shoots very flat and a 32gr bullet is doing 4200 fps or thereabouts, and yes some sports shops sell the ammo, or if not ask them to stock it for you and they will. I reload for it as well, it has the 222magnum case behind a 20 caliber projectile great caliber for hard-to-get-at pests that stay out of range of rimfire love it

if a fella has two .223s (which many on here do) one with a say 1;8 twist and one with a 1;12 twist... the fast twist is spinning projectile half as fast again... if fed eggzachary the same load..the 1;8 will be more explody and the 1;12 will penetrate further...HOPEFULLY someone will have photographic evidence of this????

I think the 204 is an amazing cartridge, Factory ammo has been a little hard to come by since the covid took over, I reload for it and there is plenty of options for projectiles etc..
It's a very hard hitting round for its size, I've taken pigs at100 to 150 meters with a 40 grain pill and they never get up.

Anything you can't find brass or dies for, or will take several agonising steps (amd expensive dies/components) to form.
