    Remington 700LR S/S in 300 Winchester magnum

    Hey dudes!

Winter sux but don't let the short days and cold weather stop you getting out and testing your gear!

Ive started a series of modifications on a out of the box Remington 700LR in 300wm.

For most this will be a series confirming what you already know through your own experences but for others some of it may come as a surprise.

Mods will be carried out which will effect the handling usability and accuracy but rather than do the modifications all at once we will do things one at a time and shoot the rig with the same loads at the same range with the same shooter after every change.

Any and all questions and suggestions - go right ahead.

    cheers!!

Haha... yes but you can't fit 300 win mag in a Tikka without modification so...

I guess I have the first chapter of parts? those bits directly related to prone shooting accuracy.

Im wondering how far to go .. experience tells me that I will reach the limit of prone shooting accuracy pretty fast... so you'll probably see that within the next stage or so...

But like bench rest shooting - prone shooting from a set position has very little to do with making hits at random ranges in field conditions, I think that is where it may get interesting as there are so many add ons and system "enhancements" that can be used however measuring the gains or effects of these changes could be hard.-

-I think the key will be to design a short course of 5 Targets or so then run the course with each change.

Then after each run rating the results on overall time and accuracy... heck maybe even heart rate... we shall see.

Also I should say if anyone is ever in the wellington area and wants to get involved let me know!

It looked like the groups were worse after you added the timney trigger. Why do you think that would have been? I have the chance to get a Jewel trigger off a mate and at present I have a standard Remington 700 trigger. Do you think there is that much difference to justify the change?

Very interesting series, I'll watch it with interest. I find it challenging to shoot these more powerful rifles consistently well for extended courses of fire (I'm shooting a 7x64, so just a smidge under 7mm Rem mag power). In the video you "shuffle" a lot between shots, would it be better to get and check your position once if you can and then shoot the whole course? I'm not trying to be a smart-arse (I know from your other video's you're capable of very good marksmanship) so if you're doing things deliberately I'd like to know.

haha indeed- its not that they were much worse but more the fact there was no improvement...
but as I said in the clip - I have shot a lot of standard triggers and have learned to mitigate the effects of them while shooting prone off bags.

In the field where the shooting positions are so varying that old trigger would see me pull shots wide I can guarantee it.

Jewel triggers are generally awesome you will love it... that being said I can't really fault the Timney ... nice wide blade aswel.

Yeah to be honest the recoil is why the groups are not great.

After one shot the rifle recoils and slides too far down the rear bag because of the slanted underside... if I simply slid the rifle forward there will not be enough pressure vertically on the rear bag and if I took the shot it will undoubtedly hit high.

The more recoil your dealing with the more crucial your pressure and body/rifle connection becomes (in my experience)

Have you thought of a suppressor or brake? I was thinking of getting one of those stainless longranges but got a second hand 700 ( unsure of model) that came with a suppressor and its shoots beautifully with bugger all recoil.
