If you went with the savage could you set back and ream the factory 243 barrel to suit?
I suppose any barrel can be set back and reamed, I had my 7mm08 tikka t3 set back and reamed to 280rem

probably be pretty easy with a barrel nut tho

The part abundance reason is simple. Remmingtons never work properly and need to be modified to a standard thats acceptable.

Savages are like Tikkas, they just work.

Here's my Savage Light Weight that Ive just re-barreled wiht a Trueflight (.223). Couldn't be happier. Lock nut gone which makes it "look" better I think. But be warned that by the time you have bought a donor (Savage or Mod7) and re-barelled you could have bought a Tikka and a half.

    Nice Savage!!

Had Tikkas. Still have a custom m595. That 1 I won't be getting rid of.

    T3s boring as bat shit.
They're the Corolla of rifles. Do the job fine but are for Nanna's.
    Terrible bolt release.
    Heavy.
    Over priced and over hyped.
Horrendous service from agent/distributor. Parts are drug money.

Would rather have a Norinco. Actually I do have a few

Feeds great, mdt 10 round modified by me, had a accurate mag 4 shot but have moved on to my 6x45. Has about 250 rounds down the pipe with heaps of reloading data.
Also has a oem plastic savage stock bedded with atlas works bottom metal, shoots 1/2 moa in chassis with most loads.

This all may be true, but the bit that really counts, are awesome, the barrels. They seem to shoot damn good.

Despite their horrible internal bore finish ! ( I proudly own two ;-)

For a 6 mm slr I would go Rem 700 sa with an extended( length wise not capacity wise) aftermarket internal magazine to make use of the longest oal possible.

Remington used to chamber the Remington 7 in 6mm remington , to give you an idea, the factory hornady 95 gr sst are a bit shoved in but they worked fine and feed fine.

For the savage, would you have an internal box magazine or detachable clip?

A lot of Remington blank stocks ( un inletted) for remington 700 will work for savage. You just have to find somebody competent to do the inleting for you.

The savage has a drop out mag and has a larger mag well than the remmy. Can load to 3.0" where the rem is 2.7-2.8" max
Can run 105gr pills in the Savage where 95s would be the longest in the Remmy internal mag.

After speaking to a gunsmith about it today, the Savage action is the winner.

Still like the remmy 7 so will keep my eyes out for 1 in 223 for some varmint fun

2.820 is about the absolute max internal mag length in a 308 type M7 mag.

The creed case is not a bad fit for the M7. Ive screwd a rem 700 take off 6.5CM tube onto a M7 and im running my handloaded 143gr eldxs at a coal of 2.813" which fit and feed from the mag. The proji is seated out mostly in the neck not taking up alot of the powder capacity. Can get enough Re26 in there without compressing it to push it along pretty well. Whereas using the same bullet in say a 260 case and mag feeding it would loose alot of powder capacity

Where do you get barrels from in NZ for them? Have a 308 weather warrior and considering get a 243 or 6mm creedmoor barrel for it to make it a bit nicer for my partner to get into shooting with. Wouldn’t need to be top of the range barrel, even a standard savage barrel would do the trick.

And does anyone know where to get after market hunting style stocks for them? Got mine filled with epoxy to stiffen it but now is reasonably weighty.

Why not just make some reduced loads for the 308, light pills with light powder loads

Yet to dabble into the world of reloading, plus like the idea of have a 6mm caliber for chamois hunting anyway.
