    G'Day AntsMan,

The 788 is a very good and serviceable rifle.
They are a rear locking bolt action but are of a very strong design, and they use a detachable 3 (?) shot magazine.
A couple of mates of mine have had 788's .222Rem and they shot very well!

The Model 788 was an attempt by Remington, to get a cheaper than their Mod 700 rifle, in the market place.
They lasted a few years and then were dropped from production, many years ago now.

    Hope that helps

    Doh!

Like Homer says they can be a good cheap and very accurate action to make your varmint rifle from.

There was a thread years ago on H&F when I found one for $250 in Dunedin. I was a student so didn't bother. I should have... Was talking to a chap at the range about my missed chance the other day and he mentioned he was getting one made up in 6mmBR for target stuff. Apparently there are a few around in such configurations. I think they can bind up if you over pressure them but that shouldn't be a problem aye.

I've got one in 308 I gave to the old man. Was an accurate rifle, barrel is a bit buggered now as he hasn't really looked after it. Was good for a first rifle.

Big thing is don't lose your magazine, when I got it there was no mag. Took me 1.5 years of searching NZ to find one (in the back of an old fellas gun shop)

I've often wondered of getting a new barrel for it and taking it back.

(sorry if im posting heaps all of a sudden, just back from Sydney)
