@Pengy - I find it depends a bit on what terrain you're in and what other gear you need. I frequently do carry my rifle "in hand", but in steep stuff like going through bluffs or if you're carrying a hill stick - I "need" a sling.

Steep stuff means my rifle goes in the built in scabbard on my pack, whilst I scramble up or down using my poofter stick (s)
