    Replacing action bolts

I need longer action bolts for my Rem 700. THe ones i have are too short now. My new stock needs more screw length.

But I can't find proper action bolts anywhere in NZ. So I've got some of the right size, thread and length from an engineering shop specializing in fasteners.

The head isn't exactly right, but it just might fit the countersink in the stock ok.

But these screws are threaded for the full length of the screw, whereas the threads on real action screws start halfway down the shank.

Does anybody see an issue with using full-length threads?

No if it's action bedded all the screws do is keep it there. If it's pressure bedded instead and the unthreaded shaft portion on the original ones is a tight fit there might be the potential for a tiny bit of play.

I picked up a tikka that had missing action screws. Literate just threw some M6 csk bolts in there at the desired length and it was back to shooting how a tikka shoots. Id not overthink it if i was you

What you have are machine screws not bolts - but if the head countersink angle is the same it shouldn't matter a lick. If the countersink angle is different be careful as the metal might move away under recoil and shot loose until things return to equilibrium i.e. you get enough bearing surface between the bottom metal and screw.

Other option is can you inlet the bottom metal deeper so that it's at the correct depth - this will likely stop any possible issues with feeding and also allow you to use the correct factory screws?

Thanks, the heads are way too big. An engineer friend is going to lathe them to the correct size. I’ll see how they look after that.

Do you have a link to the engineering shop?
