Thats very good news.
About time, I've just about given up on a 7x57 of 7x64 at a reasonable price here in W.A.
The 7x57 Mauser is the flat-shooting one the Boers used to give the British incl NZers a hard time with their stripper clip loaded Mauser rifles. Same with the Spanish giving American forces a hard time. It was the cartridge that put the Mauser rifle on the map. The 8mm Mauser came later and as with most things, Military adoption means civilian/hunting users largely follow.
About 4 years ago I went to a Weapon shop in Germany to look for stripper clips for 7x57 (for my Arisaka 38) and the guy, about 60 yrs old looked at me oddly indicating I must be mistaken, he'd never heard of 7x57 Mauser!
Am I missing something.......I never knew the 7 x 57 had gone away.
Greetings All,
I had noticed that the 7x57 seemed to have dissappeared from the continental rifle chamberings. It's place seemed to have been taken by the 7mm-08 and 7x64. The 7x64 is an interesting cartridge which seems to have been the inspiration for the .270 Winchester. That is fighting talk @Huntfisheat but Ken Waters, a devout 7x57 fan was froced to admit that he could not match his handload 7mm-08 velocity in his 7x57 without excessive pressure.
Regards Grandpamac.
7x57 and 7x64 both great cartridges. 7x64 is EU equivalent of the 280.
Agree with @Husky1600 ... they never went away, just belong to discerning owners. Good to see some newer rifles coming out in classic calibres.
@Huntfisheat I see your dukes and rase em…..don’t see any 7mm08 taking elephants ;) balls in your court:P:XD:
Greetings All,
The 7x64 came out in 1912, the same year as the .275 Holland and Holland Magnum. The 7x64 is arguably the ancestor of the .280 Remington that came out in 1958 but the .275 H&H is definitely the ancestor og the 7mm Remington Magnum that came out in 1962. There is not much that is really new in cartridge design.
Regards Grandpamac.
@Sideshow That's a tennis match I want to see :D
@chainsaw Yep l have posted before that IMO the 7x64 is one of the most underrated hunting rounds going ,while l was in Africa another Guide had a French Built Mauser in 7 X64 & he hardly used it because we were supplied with a lot of RWS ammo & all he was given were from memory 174 Grn Soft points for it & they kicked him badly .I loved the classic stock on the rifle & used it a fair bit on Bait gathering hunts & the recoil never bothered me so he offered it to me just as l was leaving for a spell at home, l said l will take it on a few hunts here & try it with lighter weight bullets & see how it goes . Bugger me the thing loved 162 a-max doing around 2800fps in the 24" barrel & shot 150 gn partitions into 1/2 inch ,this is where l buggered up as l rang him & let him know l had taken 1/2 a dozen deer & a Tahr with those loads & they were very mild too shoot & he decided he would hang onto the rifle & take it home to Germany & try my reloads .It has always been in the top 3 guns l should have brought .
I have a small collection of older Sako's & have always said l will add a Sako AV in 7x64 if one comes up here ,other wise the next time we go to the US l will put the word out as they use them for Moose & Elk rifles.
Great cartrigde - now if only i could sell my rifle that fires it!

It's better than the 7mm08 - it's got more capacity. It you load the 7mm Mauser to modern pressures it beats the 7mm08 with 140's and then doubles down with longer heavier bullets too.
Due to the larger capacity, and longer throats on some of the 7mm Mausers, when I make loads for my 7x57's I start at the max loads for the 7mm08.
Zero check with my Remington Mountain rifle, a 139 grain bullet at slightly over 2900fps which is what a 7x57 should be doing...

@Sideshow You bastard, another Rabbit Hole to fall in to :P:thumbsup:
18lb rifle producing 31.9lbs recoil..........a 50 BMG maybe
7x57 is an awesome round...the mighty 270winchester is often compared to it...and thats good enough for this K1W1.
@bunji if it wasnt so hard to get into NZ ad get rifles on my ticket here Id pick that Parker Hale and get it to you! mind you the first three on the list are also bloody good! @Huntfisheat 18lb rifle:wtfsmilie: time for another beer lol
The Dynamit noble has a funny looking stock and the cut out by the action looks naff.
The Schultz and Larson looks like a cracker. Bet the mounts are a bit pricey.
Parker hale would work well, 4th one is gone so won't comment but not a real fan of that Mauser 66. I'd have it if some gave it to me but other rifles id buy before I would buy that.
On the cover of the old mountain safety council firearms handbook is a photo of a beautiful custom 98, engraved and slimmed but not over done. That in something traditional ( 7x57 7x64 etc ) would be my dream rifle.
Yeah @Moa Hunter my custom BSA is a heavy bugger Id not want to lug it up some kiwi hills:O_O: ok for the flats of Berkshire. Might look at sliming it a bit but Im getting good groups so a little bit lothed to just enjoying it at the moment. The last buck dropped so fast he didnt even get time to spit out his grass!
That is fantastic news, looks like my son is getting my Sako 30-06 so I can make room for one.
If the Mauser M18 in 7x57 makes it here it will be a nice option in what is a really solid performing rifle. Just hope that along with them is a supply of 7x57 ammo and components otherwise they won't get off the shelves like the 6.5prc isn't at present.
There's a lot of nostalgia that goes with the 7x57 for us older types. Even accepting that the 7-08 is as good or better.
If anyone really wants to play the 'my rifle is faster than yours :P ' game, Alpha Muntions now have 7mm08 brass with their optimised case head design. Supposedly takes insane pressures.
I think the 7x57 will lose out due to the fact that no one really bothers to make exceptional brass for it. RWS maybe...
Lapua make 7x64 brass...
But some of the old CRF Mauser actions will probably let go long before the cases will, not saying anyone should ever go out of their way trying to burst a brass case of course! :on fire:
Very good decision from Mauser. The 7mm is one of the best calibers.
Plain Jane Ruger M77 7x57, but special to me.
Shoots great, and now with bedded stock, shoots even better.
Prefers round nose projectiles.

I used an old Parker Hale 7x57 for culling in the Scottish Highlands, great calibre. Obviously it wouldn't work now as it hadn't had lots of money spent on customising and load development, etc, etc.
There is plenty of brass around as factory ammo, and 7mm is the second most common calibre for projectiles after .308
The 7mm08 is only better if you keep the 7x57 to the low pressures of a Remington Rolling block. There is no reason not to run the cartridge at the same pressures as a .308 or a .270, 60-65psi, in which case (pun intended) the 7mm is a better cartridge all round, unless you insist on a short action. 7x57 are usually loaded in long actions unless they come in the Mauser action the cartridge was developed for.
If you have a 7x57 you have to handload. Otherwise I would have a 7mm08.
Nostalgia? Nostalgia doesn't make my 140 bullets go over 2900 fps and my 160 grainers hit 2700fps and shoot half inch groups. That's the Mauser magic that does that.
I think a selling point of the older 7x57s were a twist and throat suited to heavier projectiles.
If going to big round noses for bush hunting stags then maybe a selling factor.
Ultimately probably bugger all difference in reality
One for you @bunji pretty flash with a bit of history.
27"+ barrel so could be loaded quite quick

My experience with a long throated 7 mm mauser (of which most are) it is difficult to better and some cases match 7mm-08 velocities with similiar weights without walking the pressure tight rope.
my 7x57 with strong action will get 120 nosler at 3246fps with W760
