    Rifle Builds

Who would have thought modifying/making rifles would have an element of fun to it.

I have a 7 saum away at the moment getting shortened to 19 inches, have done plenty at 16 and 20 inches but none in between, handy things those stubby little rifles.

Anyone have a favourite modification/build, are using their ultimate machine or planning a dream build ?

I brought a cheap Hogue Stocked M700 but its a bit like granddads axe, New 24 inch barrel in 6.5TCU , Carbon Stock, suppressor etc. Not so cheap now but I use it far far, far more than my 6.5SAUM. Its a hoot to shoot and cheap to run.
I may get the barrel shortened in the future but its a wee bit short on velocity as it is

I also used to build a few rattle guns (mecano for big boys) but only kept my original build!

It's definitely fun, I get lots of enjoyment from playing around with different rifles.

As you know, I recently took an old scruffy model 7 in 7mm08 and had it lopped back to 15" and a Dpt muffler fitted.

It's total length is now about two inches shorter than it was originally with its 20" barrel.

It is balanced perfectly and feels just right as you handle and bring it up to the shoulder.

It's not the most expensive or tidest but there's just something about it. And it shoots.

    Top. Tikka M595 284win
    Bottom. Mod 7 7mm08 15"

If I build another rifle to will be a 458 win mag on a Mauser action with a walnut stock. I certainly don't need it, but would get a great deal of satisfaction putting a 500gr bullet through a stags shoulder.

I dont know but I would hope so.
Shot the odd deer on foot with the shotgun using buckshot.

Had a mate that did it a lot as well.
He would stagger load the mag with both buckshot and slugs.
Works a treat in tight country.

moments thinking about making a rifle platform, ammo etc better for what i want to achieve take up a huge part of my day . .. whats left over i think about hunting.

getting the funds to make it happen is the problem we all know . . but on the positive side if you have to watch the pennies ya do have to choose very carefully what to do . . . anyway, this is my 3rd dedicated cast bullet rifle i am putting money into and probably not my last

previous owner chopped the barrel to 18'' i went to 15'' with a short mag

i've tried something like 5 or 6 scopes lookn for that mix that work best for me in the field and on the range, some modified with reticle changes and custom dials . . its taken a few years but getting close now. Mk4 3.5-40 mildot with M3 dial ( 1 MOA per click, 55 MOA in one turn with zero stop ) sitting in Burris rings with 10 MOA cant in front and rear ring on a custom 50 MOA rail - enough to get me to 400yds with subsonic ammo firing 197grn bullets.

plans for the future are a trigger job, DPT modular overbarrel suppressor to replace DPT can, lastly maybe have a look at the forend bedding .. other than that it fits the job description nicely, to shoot Goats (mostly in Central with 35-70 a week is common ) with cheap cast bullets out to 200yrds and the occasional Deer with 1600fps load out to 100+ yrds

Nothing is tough about having a 70 lb bow and looking like an uncoordinated praying mantis while trying to draw it back.
