Thread: Rifle for good keen man

A mate of my young fellah is keen to get into the sport. Asked my advice on purchasing a rifle.
I suggested that he couldn't really go wrong with a new Tikka T3.
Standard calibre, 308 or 270.
Budget up to 2K.
Any thoughts or helpful comments any one?

Yip anything will do just get him out there time in the bush is what new hunters need the most

Hard to go wrong with a Howa in 243/308.

If going the Tikka route then 270 or 30-06.

Probably better to buy second hand so there is more $ left for a good scope and mounts.

i would go howa over tikka myself. they are damn good and inexpensive. 308 is a good all rounder and i have shot lots with it before moving to 7mmRM

I have a sauer 100 that shoots a clover leaf if I'm shooting well, and my friend decided to buy one also, which also shoots just as well. So along with the other suggestions, I'd certainly put a Sauer into the consideration list at the same price point.

The only thing I'd say about a rem model 7, is that they are very light, and a new shooter may find the recoil somewhat intolerable. I say that from having owned 2 in 7mm08 over the years.

i like those sauers too, shot one and was impressed, just a little short in the stock for me though so i would have needed to fit a pad

Good quality second hand.

Tell him to be patient and he will pick up a bundle of all sorts from somewhere.

tikka s/s 308 -7mm08 good starting point vx1 3x9. suppressor later on. Or go second hand and buy a complete package already set up.
308 has more factory ammo, so better chance of finding a store with ammo on the shelf.
I wouldn't put him in to a 270 and wouldn't go any lighter just my personal opinion

@RugerM77 If he waits a couple of weeks there will be a lot of good second hand deals where people go along with others for their first hunts during the roar & decide it is not for them so sell the rifles they brought for it or want to upgrade after seeing their mates flash rig , in may last year l brought 2 bargains including a rifle l have looked for close to 10 years to find .

There was a very good deal for a bit more money on a Sako A7 in 7/08 fully set up with New Magnum DPT Suppressor ,Vortex 2.5 -10 & dies for sale on the forum not long ago,that would do him for the rest of his life with a quality well balanced accurate rifle that is not going to kick the hell out of him & good enough for anything that we hunt here. In all honesty.

Get said person to go into a shop.

Pick up a couple in the calibers their likely to purchase and see which one feels the best or fits the best.

Then if possible go to a range where other people have some these rifles or similar shoot them and then see which one they like the best.

I know that seems a bit old fashioned but it works.

For instance I find the Sako a7 and Tikkas dont fit me at all and I find the recoil pad on the tikkas to be terrible.

However hand me a Sako 75 or a good old Howa and I'm happy as a pig in shit.

A decent trigger is an absolute must. Nothing worse for a newbie than a trigger he has to fight with.

Reasonable priced used rifle with a good trigger and spend the rest on a very good reliable scope.
