Ergonomically, designing handles for using middle finger as trigger finger allows a better grip. The thumb-index pinch grip is natural and strong. And the flexor tendons to the middle finger also run straight, unlike the index finger flexors (cf. image).



Of course this is irrelevant with traditional wrist-kinking stocks where every tendon is out of line.

My take is wooden stocks require the grain to run longways though the grip for strength. With modern plastics, carbon fibre and fibreglass you can have any shape you want.
