Thread: Rings for Sakos

I have bought a couple of Sakos with my PonyTokens, both of which need rings (25mm). Not being familiar with these things, I see they require a specific sort of ring which I do not possess in my box o' bits. Front and rear different sizes, little doodackey notch (instead of the bar I'm used to) etc..

First one is an A1 Vixen, second is a L579 Forester. Can anyone tell me what the usual go to is? I don't mind forking out for the proper thing, but as I said, all new to me... Learn me up!

Leupold also have rings to fit. Bit cheaper than the optilocs.

I have got some mint sets here to suit those rifles. Can send for you to inspect.

Cheers for the replies and info. The two different (tapered?) dovetails certainly threw me when I first had a look. Will look into what @garyp has to suit, nothing super fancy to mount, just a vx2 for the Vixen and a Diamondback for the Forester

You don't have to use Optilocks which are overpriced and heavy, especially the two piece versions. Shops love to push Optilocks because they make more profit selling them. They do have plastic inserts which supposedly help stop the scope tube from bending and can prevent marring. I find Optilocks to be too high for most scopes even in their lowest version which is the one piece ring mount.

As Clint Ruin says, Leupold make Sako rings in three sizes and 1" and 30mm which are lighter and less expensive. I've used them on various Sako rifles for over 30 years with no trouble whatsoever. You must use Leupold rings with the action mount screw on the left hand side of the action because of the way the tapered dovetail works. Optilock action mount screw must be on the right side. I've also needed to lap a few Leupold ring mounts and some that didn't need it.

There is also the option of using a pictatinny rail with a large variety of rings.

Have Leupold Sako rings (3 Sakos). I like them.

Yup, take @garyp up in his offer. He did just that for me - sadly didn’t fit, but genuine good bugger and can’t get more helpful than that.

optilock one piece rings are great, the leupold steel ones are fine too

the difference if buying second hand is likely to be around $50 and in my mind if the optilocs are worth the extra.

I’ve had 3 sets of optilocks and can’t fault them. They are a bit chunky but the plastic inserts mean no lapping or ring marks. As Bill says the one piece rings are best as they are lighter than bases with rings

The problem with Optilocks is that you cant get them low enough for my liking , they need to make an xtra low model .

I always used leupold low rings on my sakes (I've had A and L series in the past).
