    Ruger American rifle - thoughts?

Not that I would normally ever consider giving any money to scum city, but their $699 deal on ruger american's look rather good. Comes with rings and a shit 4x scope that you could put on a .22 at a later date.

Are they as bad as they look? i have seen some impressive groups come out of the 6.5 and .223 variants.

Only wanting it to fill the safe and keep as a back up or loan gun with a little vx3i on top.

PS. Dont say get a savage as I can stand them.

I've got the predator. Pretty happy with. Heard only good things about them.

I bought an American a few weeks back from H&F. I haven't got anything to compare it against, because it's my first rifle. I took it to the range and zeroed it in at 100m. I have very limited experience but all the guys at the range seemed reasonably impressed with my groupings...

Hate the hard stock plus the magazine is a mongrel to load ... Get a used Tikka ...

The one I playing was not all that accurate. Just didn't work for me ..

Price point is the only good point really

Used Tikka out of the question. They are normally dearer than a new Tikka......

In all seriousness, for a spare, a better second hand rifle at the same value would be a better idea. Howa often pop up in that price bracket too.

The Ruger Americans that I have seen and used all shot well. Just has the usual soft stock issue.

I'd say the Howa 1500 is better value for money but they don't seem to be available for around $700 like they used to, I haven't looked though.

Ruger is very cheaply made with all plastic stock, mine's pretty stiff after epoxy. Trigger is easy enough to lighten. The only thing i really hate is the one size fits all bolt that looks like it could handle up to 30mm cannon, weighs a frickin ton

Have a 30 06 in Ruger American, they have some features like the magazine well and mag that aren't the best but in saying that they work ok, mine is accurate and even with the big bolt it is still my lightest heavy caliber I own. It's nice to carry and points well so really I have no problem with it. As a spare rifle you can't go wrong, search google and most of the reviews are good.
If you could afford a Tikka or such like rifle that would be better but for the price it's a good buy.

Thinking about the one Ruger I have ( an American in .223) makes my head hurt. In my opinion the adjective that best describes them is 'agricultural'.
