Thread: Ruger American rifle - thoughts?

They've always been my pick out of the 'budget' rifles; they blow the Savage Axis, Remington 770/710/783, Mossberg ATR etc out of the water.
Two of my mates have them and they are happy with them, yeah they have a crappy plastic overmoulded stock with plastic trigger guard, but then so does the Tikka T3X. Furley's (the Ruger importers) have been good to deal with re warranties etc in the past, I'd say find a retailer that deals through them and see if they can match the price, maybe $699 without a scope, then you're covered.

That's about as accurate as saying two tyres are the same quality as they're the same size.
It amuses me how people put Rem SPS and T3/T3X stocks in the same category- they're worlds apart in quality/function. SPS truly means ""shitty plastic stock", more floppy than Hugh Hefner without the Viagra

I should have emphasised that I don't mind a plastic stock, it's the trigger guard being plastic that I don't like. To me the bolt, (including bolt shroud), bottom 'metal'/floor plate, and trigger guard ought to be metal.

Love my Ruger American - 10mm 5 shot group with my 22-250. Of course some things will suffer - the front end of the stock. The huge bolt cracks me up every time. Much lighter than other rifles - prefer it over Howa, Savage etc. Have only heard good things from people who own them really. Magazine can be a bit iffy, but Furley's replaced my magazine for free as it had an issue. Don't often get that sort of service!

Bit of a Ruger fan me .Have had (and still own) a few mk2 m 77s plus a 22wmr American which is bloody accurate as hell . Save up for a KIMBER

I could go out and buy a Kimber or another Sako, tikka etc tomorrow. Without sounding like a cock, its not a money issue thing, just in a mood to fill that space with something i couldnt give a shit about. Something that can get banged and scratched and loaned out to my non hunting mates when i take them out etc.
I might just get one, throw a vx3i on it and see how she shoots.

I have a Ruger American Ranch Rifle in .300 Blackout. I had to tweak the trigger (all Rugers, and most other American rifles need that) and polish the bolt body to eliminate the 'whistle' when I worked the bolt, otherwise a very accurate and neat rifle. They are good value for money and well-designed.

Good guns for the money.
Stock requires some epoxy if it's your main rifle but it will be fine as it to 350m calibre and shooter dependant.
Mag is well designed and the the layout of safety is nice (tang), I think ruger got the calibre and twist choices 'right' for modern long pills.
I'm looking at one on 22-250 as they have a 1:10 twist.
Can't really go wrong if it's your spare guns and you already have the scope.

There a bitch to bed. But if your not fussy then good stuff go for it

They're great value rifle if you are just looking at a rifle that will get job done, lightweight, accuracy is excellent and will match rifles twice the price, great trigger after a wee polish and chop part of the spring. Magazine feeds perfect and fits flush.
Can fill the fore-end as mentioned above, I'm not sure why you would try and bed one though? it's integral bedding system is similar to target rifles and one of the reasons they are so accurate, torquing up correctly is about all you need to check.
Many Tikka owners will comment to buy a Tikka without even having shot a Ruger of course as they believe they are the only rifle you can buy

All the reviews of the rifles i've looked at in that price bracket pretty much shoot the same. I just go by feel and if i like the way it looks. I personally didn't like the way the Ruger felt and didn't like the way the bolt cycled. Each to their own though.

Also its been a while since i'd held one, they may well have modified how they make them. It was when they first came out. I thought they looked the better of the ones in that price range.
