Running out of elevation adjustment - advice

HI

I have acquired a Franchi Horizon 300WM that's had some trouble getting a zero.

Has 2 piece rem700 bases on it with some unknown rings and a Burris signature 5-25x50 scope, have tried sighting it in and am always running out of elevation up adjustment at about 50 yards. It's usually 6inches low before it can't be elevated anymore. I have turned the scope dials each way counting clicks etc to get back to the center, also tried another old scope and shimmed the back base with the same issue happening.

I might be missing something simple but does anyone have any ideas? I'm thinking it might need some different bases

Post up a picture mate. Might help identify the issue. 2 piece base, you haven't got them back to front?

@leololol I think you may have shimmed the wrong end. I may be wrong but I think you need to lift the front end to get more dialable elevation.

Does this scope dial up, I made a stupid mistake once with my Z5. I just turned the turret on top and ran out of elevation but what I should have done was remove the turret and wind the elevation around before putting the turrets back on. I had plenty of elevation.

Nope has done it correctly, need to lift the back or drop the front to get extra elevation.

Maybe try a rail with 20moa tilt on it.

The Franchi horizon is higher in the front of the action than the back. I bet you've got the front mount on the rear and vice versa. Only possibly thing that could leave your scope pointing so high.
The Burris has 65 MOA total adjustment in elevation, meaning 32.5MOA up or down from centre, so you have a upwards tilt of somewhere around 40MOA. Nothing else but two rings of different height or bases of the incorrect height could cause this bad of misalignment.

Sorry, my bad. I got that round the wrong way. Yes should be higher at the rear. Just looked at my 20moa rail and definitely higher at the back.

That would be hard to achieve wouldn't it? It uses Rem 700 style bases and these have a different hole spacing for front and rear ...

Thanks for the replies, I have chucked some photos up of the bases. I'll take them off soon and measure them to see if they are different heights but it would explain the issue.

you wont need to take them off to measure them

they look like pretty std weaver type bases...give us photo of rings too please...... are you sure they are the same height "rings".

Is the barrel straight?

a simple test to see if the scope is bent...is to turn it 90 degrees in the rings.....seen it before the body of scope is bent ...have you tried boresighting it??? would be interesting as to what that tells you... even placed in black n decker workmate and looking length of your section will tell you if scope is pointing when hole in barrel is or not....... a massive pressure point issue is the only other thing I can think of causing issue.

What are the numbers on the bases? Should be (I think) 36 rear and 35 front for weaver bases

its 36 forsure..the other one maynot be 35??? cant quite see it even blowing up photo

cant read the numbers on the bases , are they 36 and 35 ? and are they genuine weavers or chinese knockoffs?

either a rail or something like the Burris rings with the Pos-Align inserts.

Not bottoming out on the zero stop? I’m not familiar with the scope at all just an idea

Is it my eyes or do the bases look different in their dovetail.

The rear base is a number 36 (0.2in) and the front base is a number 46 (0.3in) so seems like I need to replace the front one with a 35 (0.4in)?
@Makros has said the Franchi is higher in the front of the action so wouldn't I need to have a thicker (higher) base at the rear to solve the problem? The bases aren't a matching set either so I'll have to sort that out.

The rifle was set up for a mate a long time ago at gun city and never got used so looks like the problem is heading towards the bases

It wont cost much. Just go and get a new set of bases and locktite them on.

You are unlikely to get a single mount. Buy a new set and get on with life. Cost about $50.

You can get singles.

Definitely the front base is wrong for the rifle and is too high causing the rifle to shoot low. Take it of and replace it with the right one, a no 36, or fit a 20 MoA base. Job done.

I may be wrong, but I seem to remember that the Burris signature scopes have a sort of zero stop that wont let you get full elevation travel out of the scope without adjusting something within the turret. Ie it only lets you spin the turret one or two revolutions or whatever it is past your zero stop. I think.

So you'd go as high as you can. Then adjust whatever it is within the turret. Then you can go more up again after that. I think.

put a straight edge across your 2 scope bases and see if the front base is indeed higher.

I had some Parker Hale bases for the M700 out in the shed so did some rough measurements. The rear base is around 2.5mm or so thicker than the front base. Your odd ball front base is thicker so a shim would have to be extra thick, 5mm or more, so it is not surprising it did not work out for you. As mentioned before just get the right base or better a rail base either 20 MoA or straight and the problem will disappear. Hopefully your scope is not damaged.
I had to fix exactly this problem for a friend some years back. He had decided to fit an old Pecar image moving scope to his rifle and the reticle wound up high in his scopes field of view. The problem was traced to a wog base. It always pays to look at the simple things first.

I put a straight edge across the 2 mounts and sure enough the front mount is alot higher, so I'll grab the correct mount tomorrow and will give it a test run in the weekend

These scopes also have a zero stop so that may be causing you a problem if you haven't reset it from when you bought it.

Changed the front mount, got a zero then shot this group at 300y. Luckily the scope wasnt bent. Thanks for the help everyone simple fix
