As a completely different option, considering the end of the barrel is clearly pitted, mask off all but the last 2-3" of the barrel where the rust is with some waterproof tape, and then treat it with a rust neutralization product like Quik Rust Remover https://www.bunnings.co.nz/quik-1l-r...mover_p0270367
This will kill the rust at source, then treat with eezox before any flash rust starts.
