Thread: Rusted bolt carrier group

What happened to this BCG, I’m curious...

I ripped into this today. Been sitting in Blaster waiting for me to get 5 spare moments.

Everything came apart with big chunks of rust flaking off. I have photos. First meths and a plastic pot scrub, then meths and a stainless pot scrub for the pitted bits.

It has been stripped, cleaned and is dry and not gritty ready for eezox.

Like a retard I have lost the pin that holds the extractor in place. Sucks not having a bench!

I would just buy a new bcg its not gonna break the bank and peace of mind wins at the end of the day.

Don't overestimate my bank account. I am an actual Jew now. I agree with you 100%, but this a beater NEA AR. It got thrown in the Waitaki once thanks to the dog and I had to wade around looking for it.

I can't see any sign of damage that might kill me. Bit of a risk the pitting on the bolt will damage the receiver but I think it will be now I got all the raised bits off. If I fire it and gas goes everywhere then I will get a new BCG.

Pitting is all external. The little rotating bolt head/piston thing is unmarked.

I actually like it better now. This rifles role in life is to go bang when I want it to and to not bother me with things like not getting scratched.

You must have missed the bit where I said I lost the pin that holds the extractor in. This is what you get when you are working on top of an overturned rubbish bin in your front yard while looking after a baby. My bank account needs to buy me a shed or I am going backwards.

The wife informed me that when she was in the army there were big boxes of these pins on hand as recruits lost them constantly. I said I would feel better if I had access to one of these boxes.

if you've got a case tumbler it might clan it up a bit ive got a rifle with I pitted bolt Im not going to cry about it and it still shoots fine

I forgot I have an ultra-sonic cleaner. I will run it through that and see if it finds anything I missed.

as long as the back of the locking lugs and bolt face are ok it should still work if its anything like my nea shes no target rifle anyway are you in auk

Ah yeah. Could call up Ken at NZ Ar15 and see if he has one. Or order off brownells

@Tussock here is your AR-15 Extractor retainer pin size:

OAL: 0.446" (=11.33mm)
Diameter: 0.099" (=2.51mm)

Source: Colt AR-15 Pin Sizes

Methinks a re-purposed 2.5mm drill bit shank will keep you extracting.

Cheers 10x over. I was going to go see Mark at Waitaki engineering but I like the drill bit idea as it fits the rifle well.

And yes, cleaned and oiled. I actually get quite upset when my guns are not oiled, so it never happens in normal proceedings. The eezox is out in force right now.

My must dog know how much I like it because for reasons known only to him he has rolled in my oil rag and now smells like eezox.
