    Sako AV

    Hi All

Just bought a mint condition Sako AV .270.
Its been bedded at some stage and appears to be done quite nicely.
Only thing is the barrel is only just free floating, like a sheet of paper is firm at the fore end section on sliding through.
Is this something i should remedy? It shot like a shotgun with hornady whitetail 140gr ammo and about an inch at 100 with sako 140gr gamehead pro.
Leave it as is and be happy with that for a 40+ year old rifle or free float the barrel, will be used for general hunting 0-400 yards

    Cheers

If you shoot a nice little group with it and then when it heats up it starts shooting all over the place, it sure to be not floated enough. But if it shoots an inch with a good bullet consistantly theres nothing wrong with it. It just may not like that Hornaday ammo.

You could open up the barrel channel so its "more" floated. I dont believe I ever had a rifle that shot worse after floating it; although on some it didn't make any difference.

Remember it may shoot better with some pressure at the foreend. Some rifles do.

    You must experiment.

I would remedy it mate. 1 sheet of paper aint enough. If you hang a can on the end of the barrel or even fit a bipod, its going to contact the wood under recoil.

would you just remove a bit of material out of the barrel channel or re-bed?

A good quality rifle like that is worth the effort and spending a bit of coin on. Personally I would get it rebedded properly.

If it’s bedded well already then the lines of the metalwork will be parallel or match the lines of the timber

If that’s the case then remove some of the barrel channel

if its a wood you just wrap something circular like dowel in sand paper and carefully take your time removing what you think needs to go, then resealing the bit you sanded with something like boiled linseed oil
be careful what you do with the linseed oil rag when you are done as they can spontaneously catch fire, and you will need do do multiple coats till the wood stops soaking it up

Those Sako carbines are notoriously fickle with the screw tension on the retainer band.Against intuition they don't like the screw torqued up too tight to hold the groups within reason.Cheap option to experiment with at the range - Back off the screw 1/4 to 1/2 turn and assess results

I think he has a half stock, not the full stock stutzen with a retaining band

Id start of by just removing material in the barrel channel and leave the bedding till after testing.

I did exactly this on a sako for one off Buzzmans mates just recently. Removed enough material to leave a 1mm clearance between barrel and stock. Removed high spots in the action area that should not be touching and the fella sent me a photo of an grouping that I'd be happy to hang on my wall.

Here she is! Pretty happy with it very tidy, nice weight to it, soft shooting compared to other .270s I’ve used.
Blooded on Friday, upgraded scope to a vx3 hd 4.5-14. Makes for a pretty useful package
