if its a wood you just wrap something circular like dowel in sand paper and carefully take your time removing what you think needs to go, then resealing the bit you sanded with something like boiled linseed oil
be careful what you do with the linseed oil rag when you are done as they can spontaneously catch fire, and you will need do do multiple coats till the wood stops soaking it up
