Looks to be fairly old, any body give me any info or thoughts on these rifles?
A guy up the road ha surrendered his FAL so I got 4 items to put in my safe, one and the best of a bad lot being the Savage, bit modern for me but looks interesting. Is ammo avail? I'll clean it up and bang it in Taupo this weekend
Ah yes I just bought one, quite a modern looking cartridge has 3 grains less capacity than a .308. Mine has the rotary mag, very clever design and bases already installed. The barrel was toast so I have picked up a good ex target barrel for $120 and a reamer from Din Colling, Mitch Maxberry is doing all the work, and I have ordered a 2-7 scope for it ., Looks to be a fun gun.
Ok I edited my answer :)
I wouldn't be too upset to put a Savage 99 in my safe Maca49.
I like them.
Not sure if you can still buy any ammo.
I got ammo sitting in my cupboard as I type..... some dates back to 1952.
Got dies and can reload too if you like.
I inherited Dads DMW Mauser in 300 savage.
Shoots pretty bloody good still.
The Model 99s are a good rifles, you may be surprised how well they shoot.
Just don't feed them hot loads.
Post some pics ... you never know I might up my offer ;)
Cheers
Pete
Calibre - think of it as an early 308. You can still get ammo, but it takes some phoning round
Rifle - probably the best lever action design built, there are issues but I like them alot
Pete it's a good looking rifle, just sitting in a box in my garage I'll get off my arse and check it out and post a photo, and look down the barrel!
99's are yuck
Maca49
If it comes with it's original box it's gotta be worth at least $60. ;)
look forward to seeing the photos.
An Old Uncle of mine had a beauty in 250-3000.
He owned it since new .... left it to his son in his will.
Cheers

I just bought a 100 cases off reloaders and a set of dies off ebay $43NZ to my door, mine came with the old Weaver 3-9 accurtrak with the TV shaped lens weighs about..................more than the rifle....LOL

built 1929
Well it's as old as Spook might be a keeper! Fell to bits ok no rust and woods all ok, got a rotary mag, barrel I can't really clean haven't the gear, rifling is good, might clean up ok
They're about the only lever action rifle I like! Never used one but read up on the design at one stage, waaay ahead of their time with the rotary mag etc.
If you clean the dirt out of that oval hole on the left side of the action you might find a little counter tell you how many rounds are in it? Think they have a wee pop-up cocking indicator on the rear part of the action too.
Couple of places on the net
Savage 1895, 1899, and 99

You will be surprised just how accurate they are. I ran one for 8-10 odd years and it was a sub MOA rifle in 308 with reloads. Rear locking action which can be a tad hard on cases and I used to full length size every time. They do have a tendency for the butt stock to start cracking behind the tang and I have one on the bench now that is just holding together. Its really split.
The rotary mag is fairly bullet proof and even though the experts say not to play with it, it can be done if you have any mechnical nouse
Starting to get interested in this thread....love it when 'old stuff' is brought back to life....great read!
I had a Savage 99 in .243 cal that I bought in 1966 and it served me faithfully until about 15 years ago when some lowlife broke into my house and stole it and I have not seen it since. The rotary mag was brilliant. The trigger left a bit to be desired. A word of caution. If you attack the trigger with an oil stone be very careful about how you do it. Or better still take it to a gunsmith. I had the confidence of youth when I did mine and I would not do it now!!
I did read they are one of the only lever action triggers that a gunsmith can get crisp.
Thats cause they have plenty of trigger to work with
You can do mine then mate, will be back with the new barrel next week.
The triggers will never be as good as a bolt action as there is too much slop in the connections plus the triggers etc will be getting fairly worn by now.
Any way the 99E on the bench is sorted, rotary mag now works as it designed to do and the action also works so all is good in the shed. Wonder what else I can fuck up out there
Found some ammo Winchester $60 for 20!!
