Savage Rascal
So after all this talk about youth rifles and the likes I decided to search for a second hand 'Rascal' made by savage. It turned out that they were rather scarce to say the least. I ended up biting the bullet and ordering in one through my local gun shop. They come in a range of colours and all but black are available in the country at the moment. You can check out the range here Savage Arms
Anyway at a mere 1.3kg and having a LOP of 28.5cm and an overall length of 80cm the 'Rascal' really is a bight size package. The beauty of this rifle is not just the scaled down length of the rifle but is truly reduced proportionally in all areas. The reduced size really helps the young ones take up a more natural stance/grip. The bolt works like your standard adults rifle unlike the one I learnt on as a child which you had to cock the bolt by pulling back on the rear. The safety is the same size as the standard size .22s which makes it easy to operate. The breach has a nifty plastic ramp that ensures smooth feeding of rounds. Open sights and has a good looking rear peep sight that is sure to get the young ones on target quick enough, but the receiver is drilled and tapped should I need to add a scope later on.
Time will tell but am hoping to get to the range tomorrow afternoon (pending weather) to see how it goes.
Ages of my children are 7,5,2, and as you can see below it fits the older two like a glove.

Cheers for your help in deciding mate.

Finally put it away in the safe... turns out this really is tiny, think I will have to get a bit of dowl or something to pop in the end of the barrel to keep it standing upright.

My girl is just about 3 and she wants to come shooting with me already, and have been thinking about how to do it. This is the way i think. Great to see the pics.

I see lots of kids, with them at the rifle range up here, the Crickett, my first rifle, is even more common, than the savage rascal, good to get them breaking a few clays and, water jugs when young.
