I imagine people usually lighten triggers when they buy savages but this is beyond light

That does sound like something isn't right, it should be the same force as the normal trigger pull - from memory the user adjustment on the regular models can go down to around 2.5lb pull and the target models down to 1.25lb.

If its a new rifle it probably came with a little screwdriver thing for adjusting the trigger weight? You could try increasing that a bit in the meantime and see if it helps.
