I take it spare magazines are super rare?

in NZ possibly. it takes the same mag as the 77/44 bolt action.
ebay for NZ$ 51 + fr if you can get it in. permit should be fine as it's only a 4 shot.

Yes they are even harder to get than the rifle, though I did manage to get 2 spares out of the states a few years back.
