Scope 1 inch tube recommendations required .

I'm in the market for a new scope and have narrowed down my requirements to this list .

    1 inch tube
    Vari-power no higher than 12x
No need to dial elevation , so hunting type turret caps
    Number 4 or Duplex reticle
No bigger than 42mm objective lense .
Light weight , so alloy not steel construction .
    Quality glass
Max budget of $1400 , but would prefer in the $1000 range .

What options are out there that meet this list of requirements , I'd really appreciate any advice or first hand knowledge .

PS - does Swarovski still make the Z3 3-9x36

    Thanks

    Ken

Leupold vx3i 2.5-8x36 or 3.5-10x40. I personally own the 3.5-10 and have been very impressed so far, lightweight, holds zero, good glass and low light performance. If you look around should find a new one for $800. For the price bracket I think they are very hard to beat.

The tract ones are very good. They've got 10% off for now.

+1 i have the VXi 3.5 -10-40 on my 308. For the price(consideringi got it new for less than 800) i find it good value. Was very impressed with its low light performance. With the free custom dial its all set for out to 500m and glass seems pretty good.

Before you get that far, there is a lot to understand about a scope and a lot of misinformation that leads people to believe a scope can do more than what it can. The first thing to remember is that a scope makes longer range shots possible but not easy. Understanding scopes starts with understanding their basic components. A good hunting optics can be a lot of things from a low power scope less than 10x all the way to a 20x scope for longer range shooting. Much depends on what you plan to hunt and the terrain you hunt in. You will be able to use a higher power scope in the plains of the mid-west than you could in the woodlands of Appalachia.

Could do... or instead stay home and put the cost of the plane ticket and non-resident tags towards better glass
