    Scope for a .223

    Good afternoon all.
I am pretty close to putting the cash down on a .223 and was looking for some advise on a scope.
I'll be using it in various environments, shooting feral deer on farms, public land NI wallaby and some 'sporting rifle' competitions, probably not bush bashing with it though.
TBH, I doubt I'll be shooting out beyond 300m, but lets say 400m in near perfect conditions on wallaby and hare, deer probably sub 300m

I think I want a 50mm objective lens but am not committed to this.
Just wondering if a 4-12 magnification would be enough, or would going to say 18x with parallax be a better idea?

    Thanks

Yep that one I reckon, it's the 1st one I thought of and clearly McNotty did too.

    Leupold VX5 3-15 x44

practise is essential with the heavies before harvesting deer past 300 yards with a 223

Keep your eye out on here. Some good scopes come up for good prices.

Vixen 4-16 can be had with a BDC reticle and parallax adjustment. It has a 44mm objective and reasonably lightweight too. Very good value.

I run a 1-8 on one of mine and a 4-16 on the other. The 1-8 honestly gets the most use and is fine on small animals (goat/wallabies) out to 300 or so. A BDC reticle or mildot is really useful. Extra magnification can help you see better but not necessarily shoot better. I find a wider field of view more useful to be honest. I'm in the process of swapping number 2 to a NV scope largely influenced by tahr's experience and videos so that will be interesting.

If you want to use it for competition, the Arken that @55six mentioned certainly ticks a lot of boxes.

Just fitted one to a 223, great scope for a lightweight rifle, needed the parallax for my very old eyes, works great without my glasses which a non-adjustable parallax wouldn't do.

After shooting with the 223 for a couple of years now using a 3-9x scope I'd be looking at something that has 2 or 3x bottom end and up to 18x top end.
The 9x is only just ok out to 300m for accurate shots on small wallabies IMO.

Have you decided what NV you are getting?
Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing, and right-doing, there is a field. I will meet you there.

It's a basic pard 008 that belongs to an acquaintance moving to oz for work. I sat on the lawn last night learning how to use it. Today I'll give it a go in daylight before slapping it on a rifle. It looks like there's a mil dot or similar reticle that might work as a rough rangefinder. Time will tell.
