    Which Scope ????

Ok guys I need some advice and I know you boys are the ones to ask :
I do long range varminting with a 223. Just sold a Vortex 4-16 Diamondback as I need a little more magnification.

I have just purchased a new Nikko Stirling 6-24 Long range scope as it looked good on paper and reviews were very positive.... however it is a bloody disaster , I've owned a few scopes in 30+ years of hunting but never looked through anything as shitty as this, it's been taken back.

I have up to if I am lucky $1000 to spend, hopefully less is needed.
What are my options, I have never imported but would consider it but it must be no more than a "K" landed with all the add on fee's included.

I can find nothing used so that's looking slim.

I need 20x plus and the ability to dial would be great as it's something I wish to try.

Any idea's and recommendations would be great guys.

If you liked your Diamond back then, a Viper PST 6-24 would be a good option, they do tend to come up on Trademe semi frequently.
There are a lot of good scopes that 2nd hand are under $1000, but most folk tend to go for something in the 4-16 range, rather than the 6-24 range, so there are less for sale.

If your lucky, may be able to get a Vortex HST 6-24, Leupold VX3 6.5-20 or Nikon Monarch out of the USA for around $1K.

Recently bought a Bushnell Elite 4500 6-24 from Reloaders. Very pleased with it so far. Japanese quality. Reasonably compact scope, shorter than their Elite 4500 4-16. Nice turrets, diallable. Only minus may be 1/8 MOA clicks for some users. Initially considered an Sightron SII 4-16, and looked closely at a Vortex Diamonback 4-16. Wanted a bit more omph so the 6-24 won. < $grand

Been using it for load development on my Hornet but it will probably end up on either the 223 or the 22/250.

    my 2c

by now you should know if varminting is you, so dont give yourself a set price, find what will do the job and work/save to get it . . . . at the least add another $500 to your budget, a litte more would be better if your buying new . . 2nd hand 1K might get you somerhing decent f your lucky and willing to wait

i like the 6.5-20 Leupolds, have 3, an older varilll, VX3LR, MK4 . . good glass, not fantastic euro but good enough for my older eyes to clearly see little critters out there, dial well, nice to use.

    good luck . .. R

You could try the Vortex Viper HS ( not PST) they are cheaper than the PST. I put a 4x16 Viper HS on my 300 Win recently and it seems to be working well and the scope cost me $900. They do a 6x 24 in the HS I think.

    good advise above.
I have done quite a bit of varminting while living in Canada, I like the Leopold 5x20 power with the varmint reticle. for value,
I have two swarvo Z3 12 power and a Z5 25 power, both with the BRX fine, that I like more, but also a lot more expensive, buy the best you can afford, as a good fine reticle scope, is great for varmints, load development and target shooting,
keep an eye on sales and used quality scopes.

Ok looks like Vortex Viper is the option.
Do I go for the :

    Viper 6.5 - 20 x 50
    Viper HS 6 - 24 x 50
    Viper PST 6 - 24 x 50

    ????

@viper - I have a friend who is unloading his less than a year old Zeiss Conquest HD5 5-25x50 with Leupold rings for $1200 (no it's not @BRADS)

I know its slightly higher than you wanted to pay but very very good value considering the replacement cost.
Let me know if you are interested. You have first right of refusal.

Reticle is RZ Varmint / 85 as per the pic hes sent me.

    PD.

I have three of these in PST. Have shot stuff (blue pheasants) at 200 to 250 meters with .204

Seriously the magnification above 16 to 18 is pretty useless IMO. Heat haze kills it or its too hard to hold still without a back sand bag.

Or its just not quite right !!

You sorta think 24 x woo hoo but its not the case. 18 x is pretty good though. My HD5 is OK at 25 but the mates night force leaves that behind.

    I d buy another HD5 first..

Yup @ Happy that's why he's selling it to recoup what he's already spent on another piece of alloy tube...

ohhh man that really throws me in a spin, any marks on the glass ? target turrets ? transferable warranty ? does it have a warranty, The glass sounds amazing.
Did I hear they were a little brittle and prone to breakages ?
