    Scope dialling check

    Hey team,

Having some major doubts about the windage adjustments on my vortex viper hs 4x16x44
Was going really well up to about 20mph at up to 500 yards but the last two times out im having to dial wind that doesnt add up. This is with a mate besid me and going of his windage as well.

    Will this work?
Go to range and set this up at 100yards. Shoot group to check centre. Then dial some random windage and check off the 1 inch increments. I dont have a rifle clamp to check without firing.

    Thoughts?? (smart asses aside)

    Its in MOA too

I can't see why it won't. But I would suggest you also dial in some elevation I.e. Doing a box test. That way it should tell you if the elevation turret is interfering with windage.
Also has your windage zero moved?

Box test, shoot round a square.
As puku says if it has a problem it may not present itself until further from the scopes center.

Don't shoot anything. Clamp scope/rifle so that it is zeroed on the centre. Then dial and see how it actually moves, say 5MOA windage and 10 MOA elevation. 10MOA should be 10.47 inches at 100 yds.
It is probably the wind/terrain doing something funny rather than the scope, especially if it has worked well before.

Unless you can shoot a one hole group then you can never be quite sure wether the error is from the scope or something else. See if you can invent something to hold it steady

Gibo go down to bunnings or mitre 10 and get yourself a couple of g clamps.
The you'll be set, don't worry about the marks it will leave

Ok and how far do i need to set up? What size increments on paper? My maths is not what it was
I was just thinking the shoot test would tell me more or less if its the scope

You can just do a box test.

Get a large target (like you already have) and fire a group at the center.
Next dial the windage up as much as you can get away with whilst still being on your target, at least 5moa I'd say but the more you dial the more likely you are to see any error,
    and fire another group.
Next dial the same distance left and fire another group.
Repeat by going back down and fire a group.
Finally dial right the same distance and fire a last group, this group should be exactly where the first group you fired.

If the scope is tracking correctly, the groups should be in a perfect square (or box) with each side being the exact distance you dialed into your scope.
So if you are at 100yards and make all 10moa adjustments, then you should have a square with 4 sides all being 10 inches, if the groups are not exactly what you dialed in your scope or the final group isn't on top of the first one then you know the tracking is out.

You don't have to being further than 100yards, it would be more hindrance than help as you will then have wind and rifle accuracy effecting where the groups go.
The most important thing is to make as much adjustment as possible as it will emphasize and inaccuracy in the scope.

If you don't want to fire as much ammo as I suggested above you can do it as a T like I did with my scope:
dialed up 5moa, shot a group
    left 5moa, shot a group
    right 10moa, shot a group
then left 5moa and down 5moa and fired a group.

If you feel rifle is accurate enough just fire 2 shot groups, instead of 3 or 5 shot groups.

The target you showed at the top will be fine, assuming the marks on it are 1 inch marks. You could also some 0.5 inch marks as well. 10MOA each way will be enough.

Gibo, if you don't have a clamp, just try the test off the most stable rest you have. Still worth while.

It could of course also just be that the dial is ok, but your wind estimation is not. I'm assuming you're measuring wind at the firing point. Terrain could have massive impact (shooting thru the lee of a hill vs over a gully). Is your mate shooting same caliber and load ? Check cant/lean.
