Scope For Father In-laws First Rifle

I grabbed Buzzman’s Tikka 308 the other day for my father in law, and now looking for a scope for it. He doesn’t want anything American, and no point him spending a heap on it considering he probably won’t use it very often in the next few years anyway and he’s only just learning to shoot.
Was looking at the Vixen 3 - 12 or 4 - 16. Guess I could also ask him to stretch the budget to a second hand Swaro Z3 3-10 or 4-12. Could be a plus to have something he can dial to go a little longer (max 400) later on down the track.
Any other options people would suggest? Max say round the $1000 mark, maybe a little more.
