    Scope for hunting tops

    Hey guys,

Currently deciding what scope to put on my first rifle and am stuck choosing between three options:

    Burris fullfiield IV 3-12
    Leupold Vx Freedom 4-12
    Leupold Vh3HD 3.5-10 or

Have only ever hunted the tussock/tops so am keen on a scope which I can use to shoot out to 300ish yards. Was looking at the Burris fullfiield and Leupold VX Freedom and wondering if anyone has used both and can comment on how the two compare. Additionally, I was also looking at a few second hand Vx3HD scopes which have popped up and am wondering whether the 3.5-10 would be enough magnification for my needs and whether it would be a suitable upgrade.

    Cheers, guys

Go for the best glass, it will reward you more at first and last light than magnification will at longer ranges. 10x is fine out to at least 400M

    VX3HD 3.5-10 is a wise choice

It’s a very easy scope to spend a lot of hours behind

Sweet thanks for the advice guys. Was also looking a bit at the 4x14 for the VX3HD but thought it might be a bit too much, good to know the 10x is plenty. Seems like the VX3HD 3.5-10 will be the way to go!

Have used all of these, not much time with the burris but lots with the other two. I am actually quite impressed with the VX Freedom, but there are a few different versions of the 4-12, mine is the top one which has parallax, CDS and Tri-MOA (Priced accordingly).

I would vote for the 3.5-10 and suggest to get one with CDS. There are things that affect holding on target more so than what magnification does.

The difference between 10x and 12x when you're looking through the scope is not much to notice.

Quality glass will usually trump high magnification on most days. 10X is perfectly adequate for tops hunting and the 3.5-10 VX3 would be my pick of the three you have listed. One on the Buy/Sell for $750 at present.

Vx3 HD I use one on my 6.5cm works great to that distance and a bit further

I recently bought a 308 and put a Leupold 3.5x10 on it . I shot it out to 600 yds on a target and was surprised at how well the aim area stood out ( about 9 inch square) putting three shots in it. While up to 15 to 18 power is better you will end up with a heavier scope.
I believe the HD models help a lot giving better clarity.

What’s your budget? Some one on here had Burris HD 3-15x44 for sale recently for under $1k. Damn good scope

Better to be low at bottom end and sacrifice a bit at top end than the other way around. I'm perfectly happy to use fixed 4x but absolutely hated variable that only went that low.
