    Scope ideas?

    Evening gents.

I know this is forever covered after scrolling through the many threads however I am after some advice on three particular scopes.

Like many who do bush hunting, I've got a cheap but trusty 3x9 VX Freedom. Nothing fancy but has done the trick plenty of times and does it well in the bush. However pretty keen to extend the legs on some animals on the odd occassion and have had plenty of offers to go out with mates however not overly comfortable shooting 300+ with what I have.

Had a good yarn with the lads at H&F palmy today, budget $1300 max at this stage and love the idea of CDS which is when they advised me the Burris Sig now also do a CDS of their own and rated it higher that the VX3 and pretty close the VX5 however performs slightly less in lower light only marginally and for the price, that got me interested.

I have narrowed it down to the 3 at this stage after spending some time in and out of the shop with them and now after the opinion of those who have used them:

    - VX3i 3.5x10
    - Burris Sig 2x10x40
    - Burris Sig 3x15x44

Bearing in mind it will be used 80% bush, 20% tops (ruahines/Kaimanawas and the odd trip down south).

That would be my pick. Very nice scopes. Great glass, compact and value for money.
You might struggle to now buy new for $1300.00 but I picked up a tidy used example not long ago for no more than $1100.00
Used ones for sale do come up now and again in the Classifieds here. If you're patient you could find one that way or on Trademe.

I have a Burris veracity 2-10x42 which I use on my lever gun, really great looking into the dark spots around the bush margins in poor light and easily enough scope for my 300mtr limit on that gun. My bolt action I shoot to 500mtr wears a 4-16x44 and the extra magnification is nice. But its more a 2010 year vx3 equivalent scope and the image in the burris looks sharper and is better in shadows.

If you want to shoot past 300mtr I would look at the burris sig 3-15.

Ps. Most of my hunting shots are all taken at the bottom end of the zoom range with the exception of turkeys and goat at 500mtr.
full zoom is only used when shooting paper.

    Hey mate,
    I’ve got the vx3i 3.5-10 on a 7mm-08 and the Burris sig 3-15 on a 308.

The Burris is a physically bigger scope, the vx3 will be similar to what you have in size.
My vx3 doesn’t have a zero stop which makes me a bit nervous. The Burris pop out turrets are great!
Can’t complain with crispness of image in either. Haven’t compared the light gathering ability, but previous threads indicate
That the Burris is far better than the vx3

If you want a bush scope that has dial up capabilities then the vx3 is great.
If you want a great all rounder that ‘competes’ with the top of the line scopes, go the Burris.

I've got a VX3i 3.5-10x40, It's a pretty good scope but I do find the magnification to be lacking a bit on the 300m+ shots. It still works alright, infact the last deer I shot was with it at 416m but being able to aim at an exact point on the shoulder as opposed to just aiming at the shoulder would be nice.

The burris signature is definitely a nice scope too, I've had a go with a few and they always impressed me. The glass is nice and clear, slightly better than my VX3i (the new vx3hd is too).

If you go the Burris HD 3.5-15 the Un luminated on is more compact.
Good scope for the money way better than the vx3 4.5 -14

The loopy is a smaller/lighter scope, so will be nicer in the Bush.

I've run my 3-15 vx5 (simiIlar size to the burris) on my bush gun and didn't really like it. To big and clunky with shit sticking out everywhere. Bush guns got to feel good in hand. If it was 50/50 I'd say go with the larger scope and more mag as it can be nice. But given you are 80% bush, optimise for that and go with one of the 10 powers. Either are good scopes.

10 power with decent glass is sweet for 400m

The Burris Sig 3x15x44 is nice, I have the duplex reticle version on my Wallaby rifle. Unfortunately they only seem to be available with a ballistic reticle now?
I also rate the Z3 3-10x42 BRH, it's a great little scope and I love mine.

I run a old Burris SixX 2-12 on my bush pig which I use most of the time.

2-10 or 2-12 makes for a compact package.

Go for the better scope optically that is sub 12 power and you'll never regret it

One model you didn't consider is a 2.5-8 VX3 Leupold. Light and super compact, a very nice bush scope.
