i think the HS T maybe what you are lookin g for
I'm not actually that old , but I remember when a hunting scope was a 4 power fixed scope , and long range sit and wait hunters had something like a 8 or 10 power scope ( those people were always treated with a bit of suspicion ) .
Then came the 3 - 9 vari power scope and everyone was happy because the Holy Grail had finally been found .
Slowly the required magnification has continued to creep upwards .
Technology is a wonderful thing , and I try to embrace it as much as possible , but I personally have no need for any magnification over about 12 power on a hunting rifle and truth be told that Holy Grail 3 - 9 would probably do everything I desire .
On my hunting rifles simple is best .
I understand as ranges get way out there , optics have to keep pace , but Gibo you mentioned 400 - 500 yrds as your limit , don't get conned into the bigger must be better , your original thoughts of 2 - 10 or 3 - 12 are correct in my uneducated opinion , and make for a much better all round scope .
I value quality of glass and simple robustness much higher than " Bells and whistles "
:)
PS - I do own high magnification scopes but they reside on target rifles which is a totally different ball game , also where I am , mirage is a constant problem and magnification just amplifies it .

I have a Tikka T3 with 1" Optilocks, going to have to upsize to 30mm so whats my best bet there? Get 30mm Opti's and sell my 1" or get something else??
I have a set of Tikka Optilocks 30mm you can have if you want . They are the base + rings type not the one piece type and they are blued not stainless , can't remember how high they are , but I will dig them out and have a look if your interested .
I don't want money for them , and the trans Tasman money transfer would be a pain in the arse anyway .
But could I ask if you do want them that payment for them would be in the form of a donation to a kids charity over there , it would be up to you for how much , and to who .
Let me know .

jeez that is generous mate, what a good bloke.
I've bought 6-8 scopes thru these guys over the last few years, excellent service and speedy delivery. . . .

Had a look through some Vortex bino's today....WOW! now thats some glass!!
Will be able to view the scope im looking at getting very soon too. Im 99.5 % heading the Vortex way
I'm very happy with the glass on my Viper HS LR. Very clear and crisp. Good feel to the turrets etc too.
I brought a Nikon Monarch 4-16x42 from 4scopes, I wanted a minimum of 4x for goats and over 14x for rabbits and magpies.
I also didn't want any of the 30mm scopes as they are all a fair bit larger and heavier.
The next scope I buy I will use the NZpost Youshop, I have brought a range finder, some shorts, and a knife and Leatherman accessories, and it's been great.
I hope to buy a Versapod from SWFA.com soon and will use youshop.
I suggest using SWFA.com to look at scopes, as they seem to have the largest range in a single store. Which is great for making price comparisons.
+1 for youshop, just used it to buy 3 dies and some cleaning products from sinclairs
Question if the scope is say $672 NZ including shipping etc, what would I expect to pay duty? This is a bloody mugs game this importing shit ......
Duty Estimator
is the place to go for that. :)
It doesn't really matter, unless you select something like clothing, which attracts extra duties. I usually just select something under sporting goods at random.
about $140NZ extra i would say. should have it at your door for just over 800
yeah might be cheaper to buy in new zealand, thats a good price
How does this duty thing work over there ?
Is it something that the government implements and monitors or is it from the sellers end ?
Is it only on new goods or does it apply to secondhand ?

This one mate, and Ground Control the legend just sent me some 30mm Opti's!!!
We get stung GST (15%) on anything bought in over about the $400NZD mark, they also hit you with a customs fee of about $40NZD.
They base it off the invoice that is attached but if it is a blatantly wrong figure, like 10USD for a laptop they will ask you to prove how much you paid.
Not sure about 2nd hand goods
You got me there.
I didn't like the Viper HS as I wanted a Mildot as I wanted to use it as a range finder. Then I brought a range finder a few months ago anyway lol.
Also liked the price of the Nikon better.
If there was only $50 between buying from NZ and the US I'd definitely go for locally.
A friend of mine had a Viper PST on order and was quoted 1500NZ, we later found out it was meant to be 1800NZ, but the place honoured the original price.
But the store said it would be a month away and after two month was no word on the due date, so he cancelled the order and ordered one from liberty optics in the US.
Still took a stupidly long time to arrive but was about 1200NZ, including taxes of 15% and $40 shipping.
When I got my Monarch I had it sent to my father who was working in Auzie, and he brought it over for me. They only pay tax for products over 1000AUD.
And on the note of shipping, I found a tent that I wanted that was only available in the UK and none of them would ship it here. I eventually found the tent for sale in Auzie but it was going to be $100 for shipping. I brought it anyway as it still was cheaper than any local options, but I enquired with NZ post to what it'd cost to send the same thing to Auzie, and they quoted $28.
I still got a good deal in the end.
What are the odds.

Before you hand over any cash think long and hard about what the bulk of your hunting is/will be.
4x is usable in the bush but 3x and 2x is so so much better.
If the bulk of your hunting is bush i would be looking for less than 4x if the bulk of your hunting is open country you will get away with 4x in the bush but not ideal.
Just my humble opinion having been up and back down the mag range.
