Scope recommendations please. low power, in close

    Hi All,
Just want to see what's out and about locally available and what others are using.

I'm after something like a 1-4 or 1.5-6 x24 type of scope for short range action shooting goats and pigs in a light carbine lever action.
most shooting would be under 50 mt standing but still want to take the odd shot out at 200 mtr.
Would like to stay under $500.
Have previously used a 2.5x euro post and rail scope which was awesome for rapid acquisition and in poor light the very crisp black and large reticale was easy to see.
Think I would like a German #4 or possibly an illuminated dot for low light.

I like Nikon monarch line but would rather get closer to 6x at the higher end. Not a leupold fan for no good reason.
under stand that a good 4x may give me better resolution than a cheaper 6x.

so what are you using. and what's available in NZ

Zero mag red dot with a small 2 moa dot ( holosun, sparc, aimpoint) will get you to 200 piece of piss. Perfect for close cover reactive shooting, no eye relief problems, small wont get tangled in scrub as easy as a scope.

Marty agree. I am going a slightly different route with a Rossi 357 L/A and a little old Armson oeg that I had factory refurbished that I might try to match up. Its old enough that it's not d/t'd for a scope mount so have to try that myself or pay to get it done.

I have this scope I am going to get rid of.
I now have a Leupold VXR 1.25-4 x 20 coming that is on a rifle I have just bought

If you are interest in trying it - I am happy to send it to you
I am a little suspect about it holding zero - I would be surprised if there is an issue with it because it is a good quality Euro Scope - but it may have an issue.
If it does have an issue - send it back
If it does not and you like it - $200 (they about 900NZ new)

Do the Google thing and study up etc and her is a photo
Its negative is - it is weighty - extremely solid built and the illumination does not "auto" turn off.
It works fine without illumination and it is very nice bush scope.

I have a old a Kahles fixed 2.5 power with heavy German number 4 reticle on my .308, but you would have to pry it from my cold dead hands for me to part with it!

Thanks Sarvo, I will have a closer look at your offer tomorrow.
The bomb, for many years I used my Dads 99 with a Hertal & Reuss 2.5 with heavy #2 (post and rail). About 3-4 years back I sent it back for a refurbish as it was getting cloudy. $300 for a polish and re-coat of the lenses. I agrees the best low light action scope I have used. (to qualify this I have not use a good euro scope. Only American brands)

Been on eBay and looking at the German 1-4's second hand for $500ish.
Also lots of the vortex strike eagles 1-6 and 1-8 available as well. Are they any good. Vs a 1990's German scope.

My dad does a lot of shooting for a living and has one of these https://www.hawkeoptics.com/frontier...4-l4a-dot.html on his mini 30 which is his skid biter rifle so gets a lot of serious work where the action can be thick and fast he's had a few other setups including a red dot but seems to have settled on this. I'm not sure where he got it from we generally only see Hawke's cheaper clscopes here in NZ.

Probably a bit more than $500 but with Leupolds warranty you will have it forever.
+1. $650 from Taihape Sports last time I asked.

I have the Leopold vx2 1.5-4x32 ier. It has a 6” eye relief so if you can mount it forward enough. I have it on a piccatiny rail on a 308. You have both eyes open. Great little light scope. Very fast to use and comes straight on target.

I have a brand new (been mounted) VX2 1-4x20 here that I will let you have for $400. Neat little scopes about as light as you can get. PM if interested.

Kahles 2-7x36 if you can find one, they don’t make them anymore. There’s also a 2.5-8 conquest on tm, I kn9w conquests don’t have a great rep but for set and forget they would likely be ok.

    Thanks for all the feedback,
You have thrown up a couple I had not thought of or had discounted.
I like the look of the scopes with a straight tube. 1-4 or1_6 etc but at the same time a top end of 8x would be nice for the odd 200 mtr shot.
I have a 2-8x32 Nikon but find the BDC duplex reticale great in good light and for precision work. However it's a little fine and sometimes a little gray toned which makes it slow in low light. the light level is very good but the retical is too fine. I have a 4-16 Nikon that has a much blacker crisper reticale.
Shoot a tahr at 230-240 mtr and only had it on 8x. Field of view was getting too small as I was shooting through some scrub. Too hard to find them when I zoomed in.

Plus i'm getting to that age here my eyes can no longer make use of an >8mm exit pupil.

Thanks for the offers of scopes. as I don't yet have the rifle I will pass at this point.
I have my eye on a 99. in 308, just waiting to see how much he wants for it.

@Sarvo, If your scope doesn't have or find a home, I would be interested in it.
