You certainly don't need this level of optic tech with short range 22LR or 22 magnum rimfires for an efficient hunter. Gadgetman and I have Marlin 22WMRs that will shoot one big hole out of the centre of a 22mmm orange dot at 50m on the range, and are very effective hunters in the field. Coincidentally they are wearing the same scopes - basic Tasco World Class 4-16s. Very effective range and hunter combos. I think his scope remains on about 4x while mine sits on 5-6x - and they seldom move from that. That's because - at least in our Cantab shooting environment - you will rarely have time to stop, tweak your AO, dial up distance etc. Normally seconds only esp for night shooting. Do you need to spend 2-3k for a very effective WMR hunter setup? No.
But....it is also valid to enjoy spending coin and buy the best available piece of kit and fancy optics - simply for the fun of it. Good to own and experiment with a beautifully machined rifle . My hobby is sports cars - absolutely unnecessary to have all that extra performance and handling - but alot of fun.
Well look what I have just done
Put a circa $1500 scope on our mates Browning .22LR
Why - because none of you ~~~~~ will buy it :-(
Man is it nice :-)
