If I take my gas tube off my AR, it's now a bolt action and doesn't meet the definition of an Mssa....

Only if you permanently seal off the gas port and permanently attach the gas block to the barrel, then convert part of the forward grip to a pump action system . It has been done in the uk successfully but I suspect it would be expensive and it would still look like one of those evil things.

I think you will find its the lowers that will be controlled as they are technically the firearm. Im guessing they would have to be irreversibly modified to not accept standard ar15 uppers. The upper would also have to be irreversibly modified to non semi. This can be done by removing the gas key and welding shut the gas port into the bolt carrier and replacing the gas key with something for the pump action rod to push on. or by adding a bolt action handle. Also welding the gas port on the barrel shut would likely be prudent.

I have already started playing around with ideas of how to modify existing ar parts to be compliant. But really its all pissing in the wind until more details are released.

Another possibility from todays release would be to permanently fix a mag to an ar15 lower. That would circumvent the current situation, but im sure they will address this in the coming weeks.

Be keen to see how you would reload a fixed mag on an ar except by pivoting the upper.

Pivoting the upper would be OK.

    Shhhhhhhh.
If somehow the fixed mag thing goes through this would be a plan.
Mind you good luck importing them.

So rushed that semi auto pistols are now deemed MSSAs by the Order in Council:

Certain semi-automatic firearms declared to be military style semi-automatic firearms
For the purposes of the Arms Act 1983, the following firearms are declared to be military style semi-automatic firearms:
    (a)
a semi-automatic firearm that is capable of being used in combination with a detachable magazine (other than one designed to hold 0.22-inch or less rimfire cartridges) that is capable of holding more than 5 cartridges:

Love how the poli's attach "assault rifle" to every MSSA reference for no reason other than engaging the concern of a largely ignorant public.
