    Shipping/flying with firearm

    Hey team.
I’m up in porirua for training. I have just bought a new (to me) wallaby/goat rifle up here. I’m needing to get it back down to Timaru.
My first thought was to ship it via the dealer network to myself in Timaru. I’m home next weekend. Would I need police paperwork if I’m sending it to myself? Does anyone local know what stores do ship between dealers? I tried the local h&f but no dice.
Second thought is I am flying home next Friday with Jetstar. Has anyone flown with rifles with jetstar before? How was the rifle packaged up? We’re there any issues?

    Cheers

    Cam

As above, no problems. It must be declared and checked in and will have to be collected from the baggage office at the other end.

Thanks for the input. I’m just going to fly with it, seems like the simplest answer

Hey, I did similar last month, make sure to call them up to tell them (takes ages to get through and even then its questionable if they understand)

you'll also need to go to https://www.qantas.com/ar/en/travel-...tml#ammunition and get approval to carry.

I know it may seem weird but yes you'll need to go to the Qantas website to get approval to fly on JetStar

    Good luck

lol. Bolt in carry on is never going to happen, Have to pay for a separate bag for action and ammo. and a separate bag for the bolt.

Have you ever flown with a firearm? I’ve carried my bolts in my carry on most times, at the request of the airline.

I’ve been made to check an extra bag for the bolt. Just leave bolt in gun.

Be careful had mates nearly get bolts confiscated after being told by airline to do put in carry on bag

Ha so I rang them last night. When I finally got through she had no idea. She just read the all the information she had, which was mostly about international travel, and laying over in different countries. I couldn’t get a word in. Eventually she just said I had to buy some checked in baggage, and just check the firearm in early pre flight. From what I could find online the bolt and ammo can be in carry on.
I’ll call quantas and try get better info.

Ammo absolutely can not be in carry on. I’ve been told by airline staff over the phone that you can but had it taken off me and checked at airport.

By the time you pay for an extra bag you might as well just ship it.

Na only $20 for the extra bag, and $40 for the case. That’s cheaper that shipping, and I have a hard case at the end
