Hey guys after opinions from people that are running
Short barreled versions of these like 18-20 inches
For a general hunting rifle, thinking either a t3 in 7-08
Then ream it or factory model 7 saum, either
Way it's a budget conscious build.
Cheers

Shaka is using a 22" Saum with 168 Bergers at about 2950 FPS if that helps.

In my model 7 7 SAUM I use the 140 accubond as the spook and shoot load and then 162 amax for the long range load. My velocities aren't as high as 7mmsaum, but they can probably go higher with some further development. ( I was seating the projectiles too long and really jamming them, now seating them deeper but haven't tried upping the powder again).
Brass for the 7SAUM can be a bit hard to find, there is Nosler custom, but most seem to neck down 300 SAUM brass.
Kills the animals well, but probably no different from the 284.
I could probably be tempted to part with mine, I've now got a 708, 7x57, 7SAUM and 7RUM, a little bit of 7mm overkill!
I have. In the .284, no nonsense accuracy in a 20" barrel.
I rate the ease to load this calibre and brass is quality and easy to find. Haven't chrony yet but I guess my very mild accurate load would easily be 2900fps.
I Very nearly opted for the Shehane or the 7Saum but I am very satisfied with my decision.
22" barrelled Tikka M595 .284
Load 54gr of 2209 makes a 150 Nosler ballistic tip go 2900 - 2950fps.
Good all round calibre and bullet.

Maybe, but a mate who is running a 19" tube is getting 2980 without major pressure signs. 2800-2900 with this good accuracy is a happy setup for me anyway.
I went for the 284 over the 7mm saum mainly for the brass selection - lapua and it would do everything I wanted to 10m - 600M , I went the rechambered t3 7mm08 route which was cheap and easy , cut barrel down to 19 mm , wacked on a can and NF 2.5 -10×42 and use the 150grn LRAB to 2970fp .Just got back from down the line shot 7 deer from 240m to just over 500m and it went perfect the only thing I might change is the scope , a bit more magnification would be nice as I passed up a nice fallow stag at 625m
More long range practise with the scope you are using now will see you right, i have the same scope on a 7mm08 and have no problem hitting an A4 sheet of paper at 1000yrds.
Practise practise practise
But i do commend anyone passing up a shot if things don't feel right on the day.
your right I do need more practice , I wasn't confident in taking the 625m shot so passed it up it was nice at the end of the day watch him try round up some of the girls.
How long do suppressors last on these 18-20" barrel ones? Thats a fair bit of snort ripping out the end.
Going back to the original question. Like many I pondered this as I wanted a 7mm saum. I almost went down the tikka 708 conversion road but a couple of gunsmiths I talked to said its easier said than done (apparently they had some bad experiences) I then bought and sold a model 7 with wyatt box. Ended up rebarreling a 270wsm ruger I got cheep to 7mm saum using a $100 rem barrel I bought on TM . Barrel was chopped to 20" and fluted . Shoots under 1" no probs with 150 coreloks over 2209 and 160 nabs over RE19 and RE17. Have been able to get Remington cases ok.
Im in the midst of gathering the bits for a 7-08 > 284 build on a tikka action that will take place over the winter months. Will be an 18" barrel T3. SHould be a bloddy good allrounder.
The Saum seems to have a bit more poke but would require boltface mods no?
Currently mortgaging my house to buy a t3 LA mag :ORLY:, christ they are expensive for 20cents worth of plastic. They are even expensive from the states, although slightly cheaper than here. I hear the 7mm mag mag?! feed the 284 very well
Think I have this nailed down to a tikka 7-08 then rechamber to .284
Or factory model 7 saum, what's everyone's thoughts on the model 7 in
Saum? Only concern is ease of feeding and short mag length
My Model 7 in 7SAUM feeds a 140accubond load well. My 162 amax is too long for the magazine so I single feed those with no issues. Good luck finding a model 7 in 7SAUM, unless you already have one sorted.
can't fit a wyatt's extended mag box to a model 7 as rear of magazine slot cannot be machined as trigger is too close, so no easy options to seat longer projectiles out close to lands and feed out of mag. For those of you necking down the norma brass, have you found it soft versus the rem brass and are you having to back loads off in norma versus the rem?
Yep Norma and nosler custom brass is soft compared to Remington.
The models 7's dont come in stainless now either. If thats important for you
three from memory, will check tonight.

And they fit in the mag well enough that fluting doesn't bother them
