Thread: "Short-Pig" ideas - Short barrel 22rf semi-auto??

Following a couple of missions where the barrel of my Miroku "Browning" SA-22 (with suppressor) keeps getting hung up on things I want to do a special "truck gun". Its too nice to cut down or I'd do it in a hearbeat - also the tube mag is a pain in a truck.

Semi auto I think. Minimum legal length barrel (I'll have it cut) with suppressor. Got to shoot really well (much as I like 10-22's they are too "variable" in the accuracy stakes). Don't care what sort of stock. Can't have a tube mag (which I like) cause I want to cut the barrel short.

So - without spending a lot of money can anyone suggest something better than a Marlin 795 (or similar model) for my 22 "Short Pig". Ideas??

I must say like the "last-shot" bolt hold-open also.

Papoose for sure. Half the weight of those ruger takedowns. They pack up so small in the canvas/neoprene bag too, much less of a pain to have then a full length rifle bag/case. I've also seen one that had a second barrel, which had been turned into an overbarrel suppressor setup, was really quite swish.

Hmmm - with some more thought maybe a really short semi is a bit of a liability, much more chance of putting a round in your own foot. So maybe a bolt action instead methinks.

probably the shortest option could be a g22 walther ive got one need to modify the trigger linkage to improve the trigger tho

What brought you to that conclusion @Tentman?

Over many years of shooting I've seen several guys with semi's (especially 22's, probably cause they're so common) who were un-aware they didn't have the safety on and a round up the spout - easy for that to turn into an accident.

It seems to happen a bit when there is some "action on" or things don't go exactly to plan. I'm just as human as the next bloke and a likely outcome of the above is shooting yourself in the leg or foot - ask more than one policemen who've done it with a pistol - the short barrel just makes it easier to do.

Hmmm - seems I've not been thinking enough - and not familiar enough with semi-auto rifles and their "procedures". With the semi (providing it has a bolt "hold open") all the shooter has to do to make the rifle very safe is pull the bolt and lock it open (and catch the spare round). Thanks to Greghud for pointing out the error of my ways (thinking anyway).

As with lots of things firearm related it pays to think about "procedure" a lot. Sorry if I've lead anyone astray.

Cz511? Just hard to get mags

One of the big thing with ALL firearms learn how to use it safely or don't use it. Some sort of bolt hold open is a must on all my semi's for hunting, especially for hunting at night i.e. possums. Why? when I have to cross fences etc it is a simple case of mag-out, bolt back and empty chamber. I can then cross fence, pluck a possum or whatever and I can see the bolt open so know it's empty. With an AK I kept finding myself opening the bolt to check an empty chamber every other moment.

This one has a last shot bolt hold open which is awesome as it will show you when it's out of ammo and time to change mags. You wont get "empty chamber=escaped possum" like I had last night.

Browning SA-22 or one of the Norinco copies.

this is my take on a short .22 for truck use, ruger 10/22 takedown with a red dot. I bought two of the rifles second hand, one shot a lot better than the other so I sold the other. Its had a couple of minor mods that it dident really need but even before them it was more than acurate enouth for a red dot sighted(or open sighted) .22 running subs. chamber flags for the win when it comes to having semis inside a veicalas far as im personly concerned-you can pull the and load the firearm in one action once your used to it
