    Hmmm - seems I've not been thinking enough - and not familiar enough with semi-auto rifles and their "procedures". With the semi (providing it has a bolt "hold open") all the shooter has to do to make the rifle very safe is pull the bolt and lock it open (and catch the spare round). Thanks to Greghud for pointing out the error of my ways (thinking anyway).

    As with lots of things firearm related it pays to think about "procedure" a lot. Sorry if I've lead anyone astray.
